If you count coming included in your package as "at a price" then yes.

Otherwise no. Dynamic IP addressing is the norm for most ISP's, static comes at a price.

my ip is static. i get 1 by default but i could have 8 for free if i wanted to. :)

i realise this is the exception rather than the rule...... :p

I've found most are static...

incorrect.

just because you have had the same ip for 2 years doesn't mean its static.

release your ip and turn modem off, after few days you will be re assigned a new one by your isp.

unless its static.

I've only had two ISP's.
BT gave me a dynamic IP with no option for a static IP unless you had a business account.
Be offer a static IP as an option. I have one as I need it for work.

whats the advantage of having a static ip address?

for running servers at home and being able to connect to your pc from the outside world. of course it's possible to do these things with a dynamic ip but having a static ip just makes life a little easier.

now of course lots of people don't like static ips. it's means they can't spam forums/chat servers and cheat on game servers because if their ip gets banned, they've got no chance of getting back on. :p

I need mine as I work from home and need to connect to various dev servers. The security on these servers is set to only allow connections from specific IPs. It was just a pain in the backside with my my boss having to reconfigure it everytime my IP changed.

Plus I'm not a spammer and I certainly don't cheat on any games so I'm not worried about that.

Tried that, stays the same.

Yours may well be static.

Originally most ISPs had dynamic IPs on the cheaper packages with static as an option but even that is slowly shifting to the point where the more popular ISPs are including static by default.

Can still find examples of both easily enough though.

Just need to be careful with some dynamic offerings if you really do want a dynamic IP as they are what is often referred to as 'sticky'. So although it can change it does not change easily and you will tend to get the same one each time, it just isn't a certainty.

Personally I'd go for static every time rather than risk picking up problems from whatever the last person did with the IP :)

There are a few good reasons to want a dynamic IP for some people but not many as it is often just to avoid the legitimate IP tracking to back up software/service trial periods and the consequences of poor behaviour on IRC/forums etc.

If you want a dynamic IP because it's "more secure", you should be aware that that statement is utter crap.
There's no good reason to use a dynamic IP really, unless the ISP has less IPs than users and hopes that all the users won't try to connect at once.
