Which broadband? Help!

Hi,

My apologies in advanced if any of the following is considered obvious! I'm moving into rented accommodation and for the first time I am responsible for selecting the utilities... I'm currently trying to arrange broadband!

I will be relocating to Ruislip.

The rented flat has a physical telephone socket (the usual white box on the wall) but I am informed that the previous owner (and subsequent rental tenants) has never had a landline or internet.

I have contacted BT to see if the line is actually active and all that they were able to advise is that the line would requiring activation at ~£127 (Though I was offered a discount rate of £50).

Considering this I tried to research a few other ISP's and have decided that I would prefer unlimited monthly usage. Additionally the minimum contract length must be no greater than 1 year as this is the length of the rental tenancy agreement.

These criteria have ruled out a number of ISP's. Virgin is unable to offer any service to the property (something to do with it being a relatively recent build and the post code isn't on their database). AOL, TalkTalk, Orange, etc, all have 18 month minimum terms.

Cable is not available in the area. It is my understanding that I will require a telephone line for use of the broadband for alternative internet services. I do not particularly want a telephone line and wouldn't have been bothered if it were not necessary. Despite this I am willing to take one out if required. In this instance I would prefer to be able to take out the line rental, telephone and broadband from one supplier.

It seems to me that the only options are Sky and PlusNet. Sky appears to be the cheapest and also has unlimited usage (compared to the 60GB cap of PlusNet). Both providers have a pretty similar connection fee.

Out of these two providers which would be preferable? Sky seems, on the surface, best but I'm concerned by the poor reviews that I have found.

If anybody more knowledgeable can suggest a better/cheaper/alternative option to get broadband (or a different ISP) I'd be very glad to hear it. I really do feel quite overwhelmed by the options available and simply want to ensure that I do not sign up to the wrong package.

Thank you!

Im sure that sky package has a fair useage policy meaning they will have some sort of download limit in place very few packages are truley unlimited.

Thanks for the reply. Whilst I would prefer unlimited for "piece of mind" I'm not really a heavy user so I don't think it will be a problem. Despite this I see some ISP's with 10GB caps and I'm concerned I'd potentially go over.

My main use is general web browsing and iPlayer/YouTube/etc. Another significant amount of my internet use is the streaming of online radio and Napster using my Squeezebox.

Thank you for your comments.

Any other comments on Sky (or PlusNet) and potential alternatives would be great!

Thanks again!

One of the BE Broadband options with separate line rental (unless they will put you straight on their trial),

or

Sky Broadband Unlimited.

I'm not sure if there is any benefit to taking out line rental from Sky unless you are going for an all-in-one (Broadband, 'Phone & TV) package.

Hello mate

Is O2/Be LLU available to you? If so, O2 would be the one to go for as they have a 12-month contract, are truly unlimited and are very cheap at around £10/month.

Can I ask, the £50 BT line installation offer, was that only applicable if you took out a subscription with one of BT's own broadband packages? The only reason why I ask is because my friend very recently paid £127 for a BT line installation on the assumption he couldn't get it any cheaper. He'll be a bit miffed if he finds out it was possible to get a reduction!

The thing that puts me off is that I am not fussed about having a phone line for telephone calls. With Sky, for example, line rental is marginally cheaper than BT (£11.00 compared with £11.54), cheaper line installation (£50 compared with ~£127) and one bill. With this in mind the Sky suggestion seems better suited (personally) than the BE option.

O2/Be is available. Be is not ideal for the reasons outlined above. If I went with O2 I'd want the "Premium" package at £15 as I am not an O2 customer. Add the line rental (£9.50) and it is slightly more expensive than the Sky package. Additionally I cannot tell if O2 can install a line or if I am required to pay BT to first do this (no line at present). Is O2 significantly better than Sky, for example? If so, I'll ring for more details as I cannot use the online O2 availability checker as the property does not currently have a landline telephone number.

To be honest, I don't know! I was offered this via the online "live chat" help service. The "live chat" was pretty poor with my questions being ignored and imaginary questions being answered with stock responses until I pointed this out. I'd imagine the offer isn't anything special if they offered it to me without any prompting, etc.

the cheap bt offer of £50 is if you take their broadband as well, they quoted a friend exactly the same a couple of weeks back.

i'd go with Be as you can get their LLU package and phone.

See if quidco are offering any cashback on O2, or Wicksta on the forums used to hook people up with a friends and family discount.
