Hi,

It seems I've gone from GPU upgrade to whole new system.

The two specs I'm looking at are:

Intel:

i9 14900K
32 Gb DDR5 6000
ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-E GAMING WIFI
GeForce 4080 Super

£2394

Ryzen 9 7950X3D
32 Gb DDR5 6000
ASUS X670E-E Gaming WiFi
GeForce 4080 Super

£2502

My workloads will be Visual Studio, DCS, and MSFS2020. I run 4K.

In MSFS at least, the Ryzen seems to be the better choice, but in DCS the Intel wins out as DCS was optimized for Intel. As I understand it, the AMD is better for MT operations vs. Intel.

I currently have an i7 9700K @ 5 GHz and a GeForce 1080.

I'm not obsessive about FPS. I just want smooth. There are a lot of pluses for the AMD, but I want to check I'm not missing something.

I've heard DCS will happily use 40GB of RAM on large multiplayer servers (specifically the Syria map).

I went for 64GB RAM and also went for the 7900XT for the extra VRAM personally (though you can play with the render sliders to keep to 16GB easily enough).

It also runs nicely on the 7800X3D.

So AMD with 64 Gb RAM? I didn't realize DCS was so memory hungry. That could explain a few things.

Might be worth taking a look at the DCS forums hardware comparison thread in the processor side of things - both CPUs should run well with DCS.

I would definitely recommend pushing out to 64GB of RAM.
