Hi guys. Spec-ing a new rig with/for my friend.

We're looking at pre overlocked Intel bundles, most likely 4790k.

What do you think of THIS one, choosing the 4.5ghz i7, 16gb 2133mhz ram, h100i cooler.

We're debating whether this is the best way of spending £650-700. (£700 is our top budget for this kind of bundle, because we're looking at at least a GTX970 to go with it.)

Is this the best value bundle out of the 4790k lot? Or would an alternative board etc save some dollar to go towards something else...

Thanks guys. Thoughts appreciated.

As idle said overclocking isn't hard and you save yourself a lot of money.

Id suggest a cheaper motherboard like the £93 Z97X-SLI. (Saved another £37).

Also decide whether 16gb is important as 8gb is still good enough for gaming. That saves another £60-£70.

Also, if its JUST for gaming the i5 still rules the roost.

There are also other AIO cooler options out there with the Triton one to keep an eye on as (with decent fans) it'll be a tad cheaper than the H105 and a fair bit quoted (possibly cooler).

With all these suggestions you'd save nearly enough to get a 970 within the (non 970) budget...

Thoughts?

Would help if we know besides gaming, what will the system be used for?
If just gaming, then as Doomed already mentioned, an i5 and 8GB ram is sufficient.
But if your friend does a bit of rendering/editing, then get the i7 and 16GB.
And pick a motherboard that suits your requirements, depending on what other components he will add to the build. The majority of decent mobos will enable him to get a 4.5 OC.

Hi guys. Thanks for your input.
My friend splashed out on the maximus ranger with 16gb 2133 and [email protected].
H didn't opt for an i5 system or 8gb saving because he decided he's going to be editing all his high res gaming footage for YouTube etc.
should be a sweet system, thanks for your help.
