i am sure its been asked before but i cant seem to find a whole bunch of direct answers to the main question. i have a few hundred quid to spend and i have a D820 at the moment. i know that any C2D will destroy it and because of that i just put in a new DS3 mobo and 2gb of geil 6400 ram. so simply which chip is better overall? the 6300 or the 6400. i have seen some say that the 6400 clocks better, some say that the 6300 clocks better. with the price difference of only £37 ish which one is actualy the better core to get?

I'm still trying to findout if it's best to get a 6300 or a 4300 ?

@easyrider
Check the 805 thread and your mailbox ?

Depends what mobo you have.

The 6300 is the better cpu.

send an email to my msn addy :)

@Todge
Check out the Nforce 650I threads in the Motherboard section as i was going to buy a DS3 or DS4 but a lot of people are starting to get the Nforce 650I boards
as they have async seetings so you can overclock the CPU but run the RAM at standard settings on it's own FSB.

@easyrider
I Answered you in the 805 thread this morning and the only box in your trust is the gmail one as the MSN is empty.

E6300. All the Conroes pretty much max. out between 3.3 and 3.6GHz. E6700 takes the least effort, E6300 gives the biggest bragging rights.

I'm not massively keen on the E4300's and, given that there can be as little as £3 difference between an E6300 and an E4300, I'll take the proven performer over the new release any day.

@Ice Tea thanks for the yip but i have had the DS3 for a grand total of 4 days so im not changing it now lol. nice addition to the board though.

so far the 6300s have it. just worked out that i have about 200 notes to spend from this months paypacket as well as about 350+ coming from fleabay sales. i tihnk ill put that away for a new graphics card in april :D

Am i the odd one out, that hes not on about the 4300, hes on about the 6400 :)

Imho the 6400 is the best as its takes less effort on the board to get the desired clocks.

i think 6400 is the best one to go for.

should be able to hit 400fsb, which means 8*400 = 3.2Ghz.

for the e6300 you need 457Mhz Fsb to hit 3.2Ghz~

the e4300 seem to require more voltage/more work to be able to get to the 3.2Ghz mark from what ive seen.

im opting for an e6400 based on the above anyway.

6400,

The 8 x multi will help and you have less chance of running out of FSB :)

You can use 8x multi with 6600 and given the rather extreme price of the E6700 and X6800 the E6600 is excellent value for 4MB of cache which does make a difference.

not noticeable. I went from an E6300 @ 3.15 to an E6600 @ 3.44, and can say I have noticed absolutely no difference (OH NOES, pi is 3 seconds faster). In games, I have seen no difference.

Quoted for truth. Most people seem to be having the placebo effect of the upgrade bug.

You're only saying that because you own one.

Its ok for people to defend their gear, but in games and windows 4mb cache makes no noticeable difference from what i have seen. Now in video editing there is a performance increase. But not enough to make it "essential" like when upgrading if your getting anything but a core2duo you better have a good reason

No, I'm saying that because thats my opinion. Would be a little odd for me to own a different C2D with that opinion don't you think Mr Troll ?

Depends on the application but it does make a difference, its very slight in most applications but a clock increase of a few hundred mhz makes zero difference when gaming at high resolutions with high levels of AA/AF. It doesnt mean the clock increase doesnt increase performance now does it..

I have tested:

Quad QX6700
E6600
E6400
E6300
E4300

At the same clock speed the cache makes little or no difference in general performance.

And I would argue anyone using two PC say runnning at 3.8ghz like my current 6400 is would not be able to notice the difference in real terms unless they opened up cpu-z.

The only time I saw a massive difference was with the quad.
The 8mb cache and fours cores are really fast at encoding but again no difference in games at the same clock speed as the 2 mb C2D.

This is not opinion this is based on testing and actaully analysis of using most of the C2D range.

They probably wouldnt, but they probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference between a C2D clocked at 3GHz and one at 3.8GHz either....

I'd say 800MHz would at least give you some more FPS on a 8800GTX SLI which is CPU bottlenecked. :D
