Which Cable?

Ok so I was fixin' up a friends PC when once I'd finished He just plugged in HDMI and DVI connections. I'm Pretty sure you only need 1 so I asked him and he said which would be better. I personally don't know if there is a better but whats the point in plugging them all in?

HDMI and DVI are pretty much equal in terms of quality. HDMI has the advantage of carrying audio signals too (not always applicable when it comes to monitors)

However there's no need to connect both at all.

They're not "pretty much the same when it comes to quality", they'll be identical as HDMI and DVI are the same thing, just with a different termination when it comes to the video signal.
