I want to improve the battery life of my laptop by usng the ram as effeciently as possible and the HD as little as possible. What caching software do you use, if any.

Windows will look after itself well enough (as well as Linux, if you're using that). You wont find any software that'll make much difference to your battery life in this department.

You could create a new hardware profile that disables devices you dont use 'on the move' (network card, bluetooth module, onboard wifi etc). That would help.

There is a Disable Paging Executive Tweak that forces Windows to use Physical RAM as much as possible before using the pagefile.

Otacons suggestion of creating another hardware profile with certain devices disabled is excellent.

Whats the spec of the laptop?

Screen brightness is the killer of laptop battery life and I'd suggest you turn that down as much as comfortably possible. My Dell defaults to level 9 brightness (max) when connected to the mains and 3 when running on the battery. But I've reduced that to 1 and can get over 4 hours now.
