Hi guys, I make some DVDs of local motorsport events and up until now I have coped pretty well with my 4 year old Sony TR7000E. It is a digital 8 yoke and now I think it is well past it. Picture quality is superb though and have received nothing but positive comments from any of the local drivers who have purchased my DVDs. I am thinking of upgrading pretty soon (summer) to something new. I really fancy something like a Sony VX2100 but since its only standard definition it doesnt provide me with much 'futureproofedness'. I have noticed the Sony FX-1s come down in price. Is this because a new replacement is out? I don't have the computing power to edit HD nor the customer demands for it either but id happily pay a few hundred quid more if i knew the camera would last me for a while and into the HD era at least. Anyone got any recommendations? Would appreciate some help on this. J

I was seriously looking to buy a HD camera couple months ago but eventually decided that it was best to wait and see how the technology pans out first.

The FX1 is a pretty decent camera. It does lack some of the professional features I was after, such as XLR input and progressive modes. Sony's recent addition, the V1e addresses some of these issues and so is a lot more geared towards professional use - as is the price tag (around £3000).

Sony's line of HD cameras will 'downgrade' the footage to SD on the fly as you capture it if your not looking to edit in HD. Apparently the footage is a lot shaper and more vibrant when recorded in High-Def.

There's also the HVR-A1e on the consumer/pro level which could be right up your street. It's quite small but the picture is meant to be on par with some of the more expensive models. It can be had for just over £1500.

I can't help you much with your HD/SD dilemma. All I can say is that I've decided against buying either for the time being to see how things work out for HD.

thanks for info - spotted the A1 before but would have preferred the FX-1. The 3k camera is way above my budget I'm afraid! I'd probably settle for an FX-1 but will maybe hold off and see what new releases are coming up!
