I'm really struggling to decide on an iPad.

I can get a 20% discount from a high street retailer through a friend so I could end up with:

iPad 4 16GB WIFI £319.20 (was £399)
iPad 4 32GB WIFI £383.20 (was £479)
iPad 4 64GB WIFI £447.20 (was £559)

I run a server with all my movies and music on so presumably I could stream them instead of having them on the iPad?

That said, would 16GB (or whatever I would be left with after the OS has taken it's portion) be enough even if it was just for apps? How big are decent apps/games on the iPad?

Wish this particular shop did 4G models.

I will mainly ust if for the following:

  • Netflix
  • Browsing
  • Streaming movies/tv series from Micro Server
  • Streaming music series from Micro Server
  • Airplay to Raspberry Pi
  • Facetime using Raspberry Pi
  • Possibly at some point for the kids to watch Peppa Pig in the car
  • Controling Xbox with SmartGlass app
  • Controlling XBMC on the Pi
  • RDP to various servers
  • Reading Books
  • Games
  • Facebook/Twitter etc
  • Spotify Premium
  • Kids games

Is it possible to add additional storage to an ipad using the USB/Camera adaptor thingy?

On a seperate note, is google maps on ipad 4? And is there an untethered jailbreak for iPad 3 or 4 yet?

Also whilst I've got a thread about iPad's...if I used PDANet as a WIFI hotspot to get my iPad on the internet would GiffGaff be able to detect that I was "tethering" even if I had the "Hide Tether" option enabled... or does this actually work? (I have unlimited data, but am not supposed to tether)

/edit one more question... if I have a 1080p movie I'd like to put on my iPad, I'm could I make the file size smaller to play it on the iPad or would it look pooh?

Anyways... what do size would people say I should get?

Thanks,

G

I have a 16gb iPad 2 and I have no where near filled it. I have a reasonable amount of games, no music, and I stream my films. I still have about 9gb free.

Also there is no untethered ios6 jailbreak yet.

Another question... lets say I download an app that's a game that's 1.2GB... can I delete it to make space and then get it from the app store again another time without having to pay for it again?

Thanks,

G

Some games let you save to iCloud which is very helpful. I'm constantly annoyed by lack of memory on my 16Gb version. Only going to get worse with bigger and bigger apps.

Ah... that doesn't sound too promising. Do you have music and video on yours? or just apps?

Would 32GB be much better or if you had your time again would you have gone 64GB?

Thanks,

G

Most "big" games will be 1gb+ with some approaching 2gb, few of those and will soon fill up on 16gb. I would certainly go for 32gb if you can just for the comfort of the extra space. your saving grace is you will be streaming a lot of stuff

64gb as Nelly Furtado says 'The bigger the better, The bigger the better, The bigger the better, The better the bigger'.

On a serious note, it hugely depends on how much you want to store on the thing and how much you plan to stream

I recently purchased a 32GB which I think is about right for me. In my opinion 16GB is fine for an iPhone, but it's too small for an iPad.

we always buy 16gb never ran out of space or such

once splurged to iphone 32gb and never used its capacity yes i could fill it but just for the sake of it

How do you get over the continually irritating fact that you've basically paid an extra £160 for 48gb of flash memory worth about 30 quid? This is what puts me off anything but the base model - it's such a massive con.

You pay it once and then forget about it.

Apple price for what the device will solve or achieve - not for GBs - and that's what the customer pays for. The use and value the typical 32GB user receives is likely way different to the 64GB user. Same can be said for the 3G premium - that's nearly £100, isn't it? I personally find that even harder to stomach!

If you're looking to buy tablets by devices by the ounce, perhaps any of Apple's products aren't for you.

I'd double check that discount. Discounts like that usaully exclude ipads, phones etc

I agree with that. If I was to get the iphone 5 (probably getting GS3) I would get the 16gb model even though I know it's not enough from already having a 16gb 4S. I just wouldn't pay the extra £100 for the 32gb, I'd just make do with 16gb again.

I guess it depends what other devices you have and how you use them with the iPad.

E.g; I've got a 32GB iPhone and it stores all my music (9GB), a few apps and games (6GB), photos (3.5GB). I've got 9GB free at the moment so I've still got a bit of space for more.

If I got an iPad, I wouldn't have all my music on that as well, so that's ~9GB of space I wouldn't need but then if I wanted to load the iPad with a TV series and a few movies for a long-haul flight or something, I can see the 16GB filling up quite quickly and would probably get a 32GB version.

Because I've got the iPhone I don't think I'd need a 64GB iPad as well, but if I didn't have the phone I would probably need the 64GB iPad to fit all my music, games and movies.

I have just apps on mine, stream my music from spotify and have a few playlists synced. I would like to use it for movies but just don't have the space.
