Right, I asked a question about the Mrs getting a new car and it seems that the only real options within the budget are the following:

DS3
Clio - S Medianav
Fiesta

I know someone in my last post said you could get a A3 on PCP for around £190 a month but you simply can not. The top of the budget is really £200-220 per month with about £2k deposit (Part Ex her 57 plate corsa).

I know people will say dont by french **** - fully star out swear words but cars are a lot better than they uset to be. I drive a 1 series coupe myself.

I'd definitely say DS3, great little car.

Have you thought about getting a loan and buying used though? 9k gets you a 62 plate, 10k mile DS3 - you'd be looking at borrowing 7k, which over 3 years isn't much more than £200 per month and you'd own it outright after that.

Buying new on PCP you're not owning the car and your £200 a month payment is only covering the depreciation. You'll still have a balloon at the end for the value of the car after a few years otherwise you'd hand it back and be left with nothing.

I have looked at the option of a loan. There is good and bad things with new and used cars, new has warranty etc and sometimes services given in the cost. With used if something goes wrong you pay for it.

I know you own it at the end but after 2/3 years the car will be worth about £2k. On pcp you'd be left with around 6-7k on theses cars, if you sell if private then you could get about £2-3k so in terms of difference there isn't anything as either way you would pocket around £2k at the end of the term.

I've always got second hand myself but the Mrs is keen on a new one.

You can. You just have to try for it. Did you contact Drive The Deal? My friend didn't even do that, just went into his local Audi, and got a brand new A3 for £230 per month. Okay, a little more, but that was without trying, and just at local dealers. And had some extra spec on it. The deals are there, if you go to the right places.

That said, as above, if you actually want to own the car outright, get a loan, and buy whatever French motor you want.

A 2 year old car at 9k today will be worth at least 4-5k in 3 years. Depreciation slows down, doesn't speed up.

TBH if buying new suits you then don't hesitate. If the lack of hassle thanks to the warranty/free service is worth it to you then go for it :) Just don't justify it with the maths! :p

In fact, I'll even throw up an example of a dealer advertised example here, albeit from my local BMW regarding a 1 series. But the A3 will have a similar breakdown of costs to be fair.

So here is a 116i for £240 per month advertised. Negotiating £20 per month off shouldn't be too hard, and the deposit is only £700 more than what your expecting, so again, shouldn't be too hard to negotiate.

That's on a car worth around £3k more than the A3 I linked in the other thread. So it is, in fact, do-able.

Chanjy,

Thanks for reply but i am trying to justify with maths because you have to in order to weigh up which is the best option. As for cars depreciation, it's normally based on losing around £200 per month in value (clearly this depends on the car/mileage etc). Like i've said I have never got a new one before and personally for me i wont due to the amount of money you lose as soon as you drive it.

I am just trying to weigh up the options and try to find out peoples views on the cars mentioned or if I could get something slightly better. If it was me i'd get a low mileage 3 series coupe even if its like 4/5 years old as long as its been looked after.

Thanks mate. I know what you are saying, buyer is king if they want the business then they will negotiate with you. Think its more to do with getting her to test drive the cars she likes and then talking to the dealership and also mention that if they wont match I will do drive the deal.

Thanks again

Had a DS3 as a courtesy car for a few days.

Things I liked:

  • Looked good
  • Good brakes
  • Easy to park

Things I didn't like:
  • The steering was full electric and had no feel to it at all
  • You had to choose between the armrest and handbrake
  • The glovebox was a weird shape and dark
  • No cup holders
  • Fuel cap came away completely so you had to hang on to it while filling up

Personally, I wouldn't.
