Hi,
My partner is interested in the Dell 5K monitor purely for photo work - no gaming. What would be a suitable card for driving this?
This is to replace a Dell 2711running off integrated graphics, which might be moved to a 2nd monitor, so possibly one 5K and the 2711, again still no gaming, only web and photo work.

Thanks for your advise,

Any GPU with 2 display ports (plus 1 extra if you want both 2711 and UP2715k) will do. The Ocuk gtx 950 is a good cheap option. (£120)

I run my UP2715K off a FirePro W7100. Personally I would recommend waiting for 5k monitors with single dp 1.3, instead of the current 2 dp 1.2, as the experience with with the 2 tile display has not been great.

Thank you,
I don't think she's in too much of a rush; at the moment, it's a 'nice to have' rather than a 'its absolutely necessary' so will probably do as you suggest

AMD is going to release new GPUs in few months with displayport 1.3, and HDR(High Dynamic Range) support, you should give her this artivle to read more about it here, and see if that would benefit her photo editing, and HDR Monitors are expected to hit market on the 2nd half of 2016, so she can grab an HDR 5k with DP1.3, and one of the polaris cards.

Aren't HDR monitors just 10-bit panels with higher contrast ratios (meaning they can display very bright scenes/very dark with more detail)? Pretty sure you don't need that if you are only going to work in photoshop/lightroom (you basically just need the panel to be able to do 120cd/m2).

i would have imagined that HDR monitor could be beneficial to her, if she is looking for better quality image, HRD brings more shades of colors and better luminance peak on top of the contrast, since she was going for 5k monitor.
but if it's just a matter of real estate, then probably not.
the AMD GPU is only for displayport 1.3, to use one cable instead of 2, since someone above stated that 2 cables had issues.

A bit late to bring back this thread, but...
I have been waiting for a next generation 27" 5K monitor with DisplayPort 1.3+, but none have arrived (as far as I can see), but the price of the older ones has dropped, so I am getting tempted. Problem is, newer Video Cards tend to have just 1 x 1.4 DisplayPort. Is there some way to make that provide the 2 x 1.2 DisplayPort connections these monitors need? Or is there a currently available card that is powerful enough with 2 DisplayPort connections?

Is there a better option I should be considering ([much] <£1,000 budget)? Are any new monitors in the pipeline?
