Which card would be the maximum spec using a Seasonic S12 (380W) psu?
I was looking at ATI whether it be the 1600XT 1800XT or the 1900XT...

The 1600XT isn't worth getting. The X1800XT is pushing it although Seasonic are a good make - you would have to check the technical specs of the PSU & requirements of the card - others will be able to tell you exactly what numbers to look at. The X1900XT is more power-hungry still & is probablky out of the question.
If you were to look at NVidia, the 7900GS & GT perform well & use less power than the X1800XT.
However, if you can run an X1800XT, you won't be disappointed, I run one on a 400W Akasa Paxpower & it's a great card for the money.

will it? aint just about wattage you know:D check the 12v rail for a good supply of amps... the more the merrier;)
I know, his PSU has 25A on the 12V rails. Should be good for at least 300W and I'm confident it's enough for either of the three choices he's put on the table, the X1900XT-X was just an example. ;)

My personal suggestion is the X1950Pro. Great performance (rippling is thrashing X1800XT scores with his easily) with low power consumption and low temperatures, thanks to the 80nm manufacturing process. Excellent card.

Its cheap as chips and it'll easily see him through until 2008/2009 if he's not a compulsive upgrader, and if he is a compulsive upgrader then then it'll easily see him through until the bugs are ironed out of DirectX 10 and it's more commonly used. :)

How does the 1950Pro compare to the 1900XT? There seems to be little price difference between the two

X1900XT is older, faster, slightly louder, slightly hotter, requires more power.

If it were cars, the X1900XT would be an 1980s Ferrari, the x1950Pro a new BMW M3.

The pro I would assume would be roughly 10-20% slower in some games when compared to a X1900XT but the difference would be smaller in others.

Having said that the pro is still an excellent card.

All round in terms of physical size, power consumption and performance I would say its better than a X1800XT although the latter does score higher in most current games by a few fps.

Other choices from nvidias side (and definately worth a look) would be the 7900GS (the OCUK one is a absolute bargin and with a bit of overclocking can match stock 7900GT/X1800XT performance(taken on the assumption that the x1800xt and the 7900GT perform roughly equal))

7900GTO - Probably the most expensive card out of the lot but considering its a 7900GTX in sheeps clothing its a bargin.

Ok so what would be the ultimate card for my PSU that would be 100% stable? I understand I'm probably looking at the 7900GTO but would it be pushing it with the power consumption?
I wouldn't want to spend more than £180

TIA

The 7900GTO uses a lot less power than an X1900, you wouldn't have a thing to worry about. I completely forgot about it or I would've mentioned it earlier. :D

As said the x1950 pros seem like very good card and there is a fairly large differenc ebetween the prices. You can get an x1950pro with an arctic cooler accelero fitted for under £130. The x1900xt is at least £40 and not much faster (also hotter, louder, more power etc.)

7900GTO is also a good card, up to you I suppose... x1950pro would be my choice though for value.

With vat...

Thats the current price on OcUK this week along with the 7900GTO for £170.

It definately looks like either of these two cards now and as I'm trying to be budget minded with this PC I think it'll be the X1950PRO. With my rig I dont think the 7900GTO would be all different enough to be worth the extra £40:

E6300
Asrock Conroe945G
Corsair 1GB DDR2 667MHz

What res do you game in? If it's 1280x* or 1600x* then I would say save your money and get the X1950Pro, if it's above 1600x* then get the 7900GTO as it'll help up there.

1280* so the 1950PRO should be more than enough
