I'm building a computer for a friend to use for his business, he won't be playing games but wants some decent performance for photoshop and other image editing as well as general office stuff. It'll probably be an intel system you know, core 2 duo 2.66 45nm, 2gb ram etc. Does it actually make any difference what card you buy for 2D stuff? What would you put in a system like this? I think passively cooled would be the only preference.

ATI or Nvidia? How much video ram? Which chip?

hope you can help

From what i know both brands handle 2D just the same. I would buy the cheapest card i can since you won't see any difference. Simply put the video card doesn't "help" in the processing of images while on photoshop.
Photoshop likes RAM. So i would get a 64-bit version of Vista and throw 4GB of RAM on it instead of getting a more expensive card that your friend will never put to use.

Some of the lower spec cards have only a sungle DVI output, your friend may only have one screen at present, but if he ever wants the extra productivity of 2 screens it's good to have the option of two DVI outputs for two matched LCD screens.

all good stuff, thanks for the help, good point about the dual outputs, can you not do two monitors when it's 1 x VGA and 1 x DVI?

Yes you can (Our office pc's run this). Albeit a Dvi-->vga adaptor might be needed.

Most cards ive seen which have 1xdvi & 1xvga also come with said adaptor, caveat emptor tho :)
