Hi

I'm getting the Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor. At the moment I use a HIS 9800pro for my CRT but I've read that you need more of a powerful graphics card to power larger LCDs. Correct?

Cheers

i think realistically youre going to be looking at a 8800gts or better, so it mabee time for a complete system upgrade if youre a gamer that is

Thanks. I think you're right. I'm going to do a complete system upgrade in the next year. I was holding off until the release of Vista and the new DX10 cards.

I'd say go right for the GTX version if you're getting a monitor of that size.

Anything slower and you're going to have to start turning settings down at that resolution, which you certainly don't want.

For 1920x1200 res in modern games, you either want to be looking at crossfire X1950 series, 7950GX or a G80 Series. Other higher end single cards will power it, for instance the x1950XT 512MB will probably cope fine if you're playing stuff like HL2, however if you're talking games like Oblivion, at native res, high fps and high details, you're really talking about the above card setups.

Waiting til Feb-ish, when R600 is due to come out may be a good idea, as there'll be more competition at the very top, so some prices may come down, and ideally you'd be looking at a system upgrade. Ofc, you can play 1:1 pixel mapped on that screen at lower resolutions, but in general, thats not why you bought it :)

hehe... i remember when i had 2x 17inch monitors and a stock x1900xt together and i tired to play oblivion at maximum graphics @ 2560x1024 i averaged 18fps indoors. Looked stunning standing still though
