Currently have a 280gtx, was going to upgrade for the forthcoming BF3 to get highest framerates...

My screen goes up to 1360x768 - 26" tv which to my ageing eyes, produces a very nice picture, with AA all looks good to me with BFBC2.....and I like the fairly low res as at 40+ things are a little easier to read....!

Currently run a QX6800 @ 3.2 with 4GB ram all nice n stable.

So, how far up the nvidia chain should I go? 570GTX be ok? is it overkill at that res?

And prefer Nvidia over ATI....dont know why....

570 would be overkill for that res but you would certainly get good frame rates on all but Ultra setting IMO.

However, it would allow you to upgrage your TV/Monitor to 1080p+ in the future without having to upgrade your card as well.

Personally, I'd wait until the game is released before you buy anything. I was amazed at how well my GTX275 coped with the beta at the same res as you. If you could up your OC on your QX6800 a touch I think your system would cope fairly well.

Would a single GPU at low resolution struggle on ultra then or is it because of my cpu?

I don't know and I don't think anyone will know the answer until the game is actually released. All comments I've seen so far seem to suggest that Ultra is only suitable for dual/multi GPU set ups.

VRAM could also be an issue with Ultra. On High setting in the Beta, all my VRAM (896MB) was being used at 1366x768. I think that was with all AA off. So even at a low resolution on Ultra settings, you may be VRAM limited unless you've got 1.5GB+.

On the CPU, again I don't know the in's and out's and how CPU bound BF3 is, but I saw a modest FPS increase going from 3.2 to 3.6. Got a few more from OC'ing the GPU as well.

It's out soon so if I were you, I'd tempted to OC your CPU and GPU and see how it performs when it's out. If you feel you need more, then you can have a new GPU within 24hrs if needs be! That's exactly what I'll be doing.
