this has higher clocks

XFX HD 6870 AMD Radeon Graphics Card - 2GB
HD-687X-CNFC - 2GB XFX HD 6870, 4200MHz GDDR5, GPU 900MHz, 1120 Stream Processors, HDMI/ 2x mini DisplayPort/ 2x DVI

this is a 2gb

could this be overclocked as high as the other card

Hi there, may I ask what are the prices of the two cards?

For playing games the first card will be slightly faster due to the faster clockspeeds. However, if you run a high resolution display and turn up the eye-candy to high then 1GB video memory can become a limiting factor, making a 2GB card very desirable.

However, I suspect the 2GB card will be a good deal more expensive than the 1GB pre-OCd card. If that is the case then it may be a better option to spend a bit more and go for a much faster HD 6950 2GB (which can be had for just under £200).

OK, so £25 (inc VAT) price difference between them. With that difference I would be tempted to go for the 2GB version, however it does greatly depend on the resolution of your current (or upcoming) monitor.

Also, at these prices I would also look to the Nvidia GTX 560Ti, which is generally faster than the 6870.

running at 1080 so not a huge resolution..

will also be running tv at same time when surfing to watch movies can the nvidia card also do this.

just trying to decide whats best for the money. dont pay vat as i,m vat registered but was thinking around the 100 to 140 mark.

would you say the 1gb 560 ti is better than the 2gb 6870

thanks for you time

Considering your resolution then a 1GB card should be fine.

The Nvidia card can indeed run a TV as a second display without any problems (though unlike the AMD cards you can't run a third monitor/TV off the same graphics card).

If you can afford the GTX 560Ti then I would go for it, this chart shows how the two card compare. The MSI with the custom cooler (£145 excl. VAT) is a pretty good deal considering the cooler is a good one and it's among the cheapest GTX 560Ti cards on OCUK.

EVGA GeForce GTX 560Ti DS SuperClocked 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Core: 900MHz, Memory: 1024MB 4212MHz GDDR5, Stream Processors: 384, Shader Clock: 1800MHz, SLI Ready, PhysX/CUDA Enabled, 3 Years Warranty.

is this worth the extra £10.00

It is certainly a faster card, and the cooler looks good, but as you push the price up you are getting very close to HD 6950 2GB territory, which if you look here is a better card in many games.
