currently using a gainward 8800GT and having some issues (its on its way out) with it so I was looking to replace it. However i am stuck with what card to choose, looking at either a 1Gb 4870 or a 260 card. Have used ATI and Nvidia and am not bothered which i have I just want the best bang for my pennies bearing in mind the rest of the pc spec (cannot afford to change anything else).

PC spec is

C2D 6850 @3.5ghz
4gb ram
3 x 500gb HDD
Abit IP35 Pro mobo
Tagan 530w PSU
P182 SE Case
Dual booting Windows Vista (32bit) and Windows 7 (64bit)

Go for the GTX 260 216, the Asus TOP is a good choice imo. The GTX 260 216 offers a better gaming experience than 4870 regardless of frame rates, I have had both.

4890 is another good choice if your willing to go up to 140-145 mark.

I've got very similar set up to OP, and my 4870 1GB is great, even Crysis plays nicely and smoothly, albeit my resolution isn't too high (1440x900). So I'd say go for 4870
