Hi, my current config is this :

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
2xRAM DDR 512Mo 16chips PC3200 OEM 200Mhz
GeForce PCI-E 16x : MSI GeForce FX 6800GT

Recently my gfx card started doing weird stuff so i decided i wanted to change, but im not sure which card i want. What do you guys think would be the best for my config ? ATI or Geforce? the 8800 looks tempting but i dont think ill get enough of it with my current setup and its really expensive. Any advices would be great thanks :)

What's your budget?

I'd go for something like a 7900GS or an X1950 Pro which range from £120 to £150, and will be a nice boost over your 6800GT. With DirectX 10 cards just round the corner it isn't worth spending more. If you want to keep the card for a couple of years, I'd get an 8800GTS for ~£285 which would be an enormous step up!

How much do you want to spend? I'd say going from least to most in expenditure, 7600 GT (£100), 7900 GS (£110), x1950 Pro (£125), x1950 XT (£170), 8800 GTS (£290), 8800 GTX (£375).

All of these cards are value for money in their respective price-bands.

I'd go for the x1950 Pro, given your setup.

Hi there Leodido and welcome to the forums.

Just a quick note tho. Your sig is breaking the forums rules i believe as in no animated sigs allowed.

I absolutely, 100%, beyond all reasonable doubt agree with this entire post.

Going from a 6800GT to an X1950Pro will be a massive increase. That's a bigger step up than when I went from an X850XTPE to an X1800XT and I was absolutely blown away beyond belief when I did that.

Well in 3dmark 05 you probably are getting 4000 mark, with a 1950pro you will get 8k-10k range tho 9k ish seems average these days i have read.

Fps can be doubled in some games.

ok that looks nice then, by the way i should be testing my setup on 3d mark 05 then? because i used 3d mark 06 till now the trial version and i was getting like 3500 points

Ta very much. :) I might keep it on wordpad ready, as it does seem to be the number one question on the graphics card forum at the moment (with good reason I suppose). :D

i was wondering does it make a big difference going for 256mb or 512mb GDDR3?

and for the brand of the card is 3d club alright? i have the choice between these two :

256mb RADEON X1950PRO 256MB GDDR3

512mb Club 3d RADEON X1950PRO 512MB GDDR3

Even tho its no threat really to ocuk since them companys arnt in the UK, you should remove competitor links i think.

About the cards tho. The 512mb versions should perform about the same. Tho if memory serves then the 512mb can be slighlty slower than 256mb version as if i remember right the lower the memory the faster they are. Tho i really cant confirm that as i think its just something i read once. Personally i dont believe that but there u go. Also really you only should want 512mb if you plan to use higher than 12x10 res. Althought it will help in doom 3 type games where theres options for ultra quality (very high res texture maps etc).

On high resolution 1600+ it may make a little diffence on games like Oblivion and F.E.A.R. Other than that I don't think it really does bar the few fps increase here and there.

okay i will go for the 256mb one i guess because a few fps at 1600(a res i never use) is not really worth the money

so i went and bough that card everything works nice and i went from 3739 to 7887 points in 3dmark05 quite happy with the change for the price :) thanks for your nice advices guys !
