Which chipset for new intel mobo?

Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading from my i5-760 to a i5-3570K and looking for a motherboard to go with it, but don't know which intel chipset to go for, or what the difference between the various chipsets is.

My requirements are simple - I don't need/want SLI or crossfire, and I don't need raid support. I do however need one PCI slot for my soundcard. Apart from that I want the cheapest mobo possible, as long as it's a decent brand, as long as it'll get the full performance out of CPU/GPU/ram, and as long as it's not hampered in terms of future CPU support. So which chipset should I be going for, and could someone suggest a board? Anything wrong with H61 boards?

Also is now a good or bad time for such an upgrade? Are intel going to change the CPU socket anytime soon? I remember intel changed socket right after I got my i5-760 and there was no upgrade path, which was annoying.

Thanks in advance,
Simon.

If you're going for a k series chip then you want a z77 chipset, probably of matx form factor by your slot requirements.

You can't overlook by much at all with the H chipsets.

Thanks, but I probably won't overclock at all. Only reason I picked the i5-3570K was it's around the price I'm looking to spend on the CPU. The cheaper chips don't seem like enough of an upgrade over my I5-760.

Definitely not bothered about USB3.

As for sata 3, I have a Kingston SSDNow which is around 530/480 which is beyond sata 2 specs I believe (3GBit/sec = 375 MB/sec), and I'll certainly be buying more SSDs in the future, so I guess I'd prefer sata 3 support if I'm not paying too much for it.

Cheers.

I would say stick to z77, you say you don't want to overclock, but you may in the future, especially when around an extra ghz can be had with little work. Knowing you have the extra grunt should come in handy later down the line.
