Release of Simcity has got me itching to play a city sim game. Aware of bugs/server issues with simcity but have also been looking into other city sims. In particular tropico 4 and anno 2070 are on discount on steam at the moment so tempting!

Here is the list I have so far, would be grateful for any feedback on these or other city sim games not mentioned that are good.

Tropico 4
Anno 1404 or 2070
Simcity

Any others?

SimCity is not bad at all... okay city size is a little annoying but the servers are now a lot stable and you can get it quite cheap if you know what to do.

Tropico 4... well not technically a city building game but hours and hours of fun, I have racked up about 230 hours of gaming on it with all the DLC and everything... cheap on Seam at the moment.

Anno... well again another game I cannot get enough of it looks fantastic and both offer something different I have wanted them to make 2070 for year so it has a special please in my heart...

Cities XL Platinum had so much potential but with shoddy optimisation I cannot recommend this game as it runs dog on my 2 x 680s... I would love to like this game but just cant!

Sim CIty 4 is still not a bad game, hard to get the hang of but I see that as a challenge :)

The Anno games are wonderful, you can play in sandbox mode on both of them if you just want a basic city building experience.

Anno 2070 £10.19 or £19.94 complete pack
Tropico 4 steam special edition £6.24

Tempting prices - especially tropico

Wouldn't mind hearing answers to the OP's question too.

Good start :D

Tropico is different but it's a fun little game. I confess I've had Anno for a year but the tutorial didn't grab me and I haven't been back!

I got the same itch!

I've resolved it by going right the way back to Caesar III and Pharoah :)

Completely addicted, even with the age.

Anno 2070 is one if the best city builders you will play, closely followed by Tropico 4. Simcity can wait until it is in the bargain bin for a fiver and they have fixed all of the problems :)

I can't speak for Anno or SC, but Tropico 4 has really impressed me, especially with the Modern Times DLC. It used to frustrate me that you'd be in the 1990's with 50's-era buildings, but last night I had a city going with skyscraper office blocks, fancy glass-tower banks and a space program. A lot of people said it didn't add much over T3 but the DLC is definitely worth it.

Agreed, when I played the demo of Tropico 4 it didn't seem to add much. When I eventually picked it up in the sale along with some of the DLC, I was pleasantly surprised. Have put a lot more hours into it than Tropico 3 and I would highly recommend it.

City builders are not my thing but Tropico 4 looked fun so I bought the steam edition and all the extra DLC not included during the recent sale and I have to say the game is quality. I have only done 3 missions but I am having a blast and cannot wait to try all the different types of leader. 100% recommended.

Ive a couple of XFire cards, cant remember which ones running on a 27" screen and it flies at maximum settings. Ive seen this talked about before and I can honesty say Ive no problems at all, zips around super smooth.

Great game, wasted hours building with it.

Cities XL was a poor excuse for a game. Constantly re-released with no updates that fixed the core problems. It looked incredibly pretty and had huge potential, but it ended up being a shoddy game with huge bugs, re-released to rip people off. One of the few games I regret purchasing, even when it was cheap in a sale.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Cities XL, I bought the platinum version. I understand that the latest corrected little to the core issues over that of the 2012 or 2011 versions though..?

With a few of the mods from xlnation it seems to play good enough to be enjoyable and I have had no issues with its performance.

I have Tropico 4 and Anno 1440 and 2070 (all with the DLC's) and I tend to like all of them, for different reasons. I prefer the visuals and settings of Anno 1440 to that of Anno 2070 though.

I even bought SimCity 2013 and I have sort of regretted that choice, but maybe time and development might change that.

I do miss the Pharaoh, and Ceaser type city builder games though.
