Which codec do I need?

Can anybody recommend a way of finding out which precise codec I need?

I have an AVI video file. When I try to play it divx gives me a message which says "this video is an unsupported format and cannot be played without installing additional directshow filters"

I have tried instaling a codec pack with directshow filters but it has not helped.

I also ran the file through s program called gspot that tried to determin the codecs used but it just says file type unknown mime type unknown

So I am stuck as to what codec I actually need.

if gspot can't identify it, then it's most likely a fake file or very badly broken

Try playing it in vlc and try it in mpc-hc

I'm pretty sure if you need a codec the error would say you are missing the correct codec and not direct show filters.
Have you tried to install the directshow filter pack? (codec packs are useless btw)

A little tip for you, ditch the divx player and stick with WMP12 or MPC.
