What codec pack do you recommend using for vid and audio? a lot of them seem bloated with stuff you will never use.

Just re-formatted and realised that half my stuff does not play. :o

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and CCCP are both very good, I just choose one of those two at random when I format haha as they are both as good as each other really.

Don't really install any specific codec packs anymore. what I do is get Divx player from divx's site, and then uppon installation don't install the player, just the codec and that seems to be enough to play 99% of stuff. And also install VLC player for the 1% that doesn't play through WMP.

yeah, don't get codec packs. Use VLC, and if you ever have a problem, get a program called "G-Spot" which tells you what codecs you need to play a file...it's a great small program. codec packs are too intrusive for my liking.

You don't need codecs with VLC, that is the entire reason for using it.

Personally I use FFDSHOW and Media Player Classic. On both XP and Vista 64.

Do not install a codec pack, there is no need and they can potentially cause problems :)

Im sure I installed VLC and then had to install k-lite for some reason....anyway, it works.
While we are on the subject, ive been trying to convert a .WMV to .3gp mobile phone format, and it just wont work at all, just keeps saying error/cancelled. its the only wmv ive tried to do this with...do some wmv's have some sort of protection on them?

All I ever install is DivX, XviD and AC3. They play everything I’ve ever needed to play anyway.
Quoted for truth, as they say.

I only install DivX for encoding though (use it for streaming on our website at work rather than WMV). I install LameMP3 for encoding too. Oh, and an old version of X264 too, before they removed the VFW format. Have to say there's nothing I've been unable to play yet, though I have VLC on just in case that does happen.

Detest codec packs with an absolute passion. I like to stay in control of what codecs are doing, not some random installer.
