in the world?

I know the US has probably the best funded and equipped. But who's got the best in terms of tactics, training, grit, and all round bad assery?

Royal Marine Commando's
SAS
SBS
Navy Seals
Foreign Legion

Anyone else?

Fwiw, I don't serve. But this has always been something I've wondered about.

You forgot Delta, GIGN etc, there are lots of special forces units around the world, I think the UK & US special forces are considered to be some of the best, but I don't know if there is any real empirical evidence you can go on to prove one over the other.

You can't realy compare special forces with eachother when the vast majority of their work is unkown to the public. As an example, the SAS could have far greater success record than any other special forces outfit in the world, but if that was true we would never know about it, and chances are the SAS wouldnt know either as no country knows in depth about other countries special forces record.

Last time I heard the French Foreign Legion weren't a special forces unit. They will take pretty much anyone with whatever dodgy history they may have. Specialist units by their nature are just that, specialist. Their training is specific and over and above their active service. Foreign Legion certainly doesn't fall into this category and comparing other units is equally difficult to do.

If however you merely want patriotic, "My dad is better than your dad" opinions, then clearly it is the SAS. :)

That's a good point. But there have been times where people have seen various special forces units in action haven't they? Not everything they do is covert, or at least doesn't always stay a secret after the operation. I'm sure I remember reading about the SAS being involved with Iraq in the early stages, with succesful missions. Also of course there was the Iran embassy thing. Pretty sure there'd have been similar things from other countries forces.

Not everything stays covert, but the news that gets out about what special forces units get up to is the vast minority of what they actully do. I would like to think the SAS, SBS and SRR are the best, along with the SFSG that support them, but personaly I think that the funding the armed forces here in the UK is just too pitiful to properly equip and train them all. The armed forces in this country are even getting close to filling up on some trades (I have read that most RAF trades have stopped recruiting), which is most likely due to not being able to afford the increase in capacity to account for more people.

Mossad if I'm not mistaken, probably am tho lol (plese correct me if I'm worng)

Edit:just beaten to it

I think Mossad is more like MI6, dealing with spies, counter-intelligence, James Bond type stuff, perhaps even assassinations, but less full on combat than the likes of the SAS or the other combat special forces.
