Which Console?

Yo,

Im sorry if this has been covered hundreds of times, but which console should i go for? It will be for use on a 20.1" TFT over DVI so i will need the relevant conversion cables (will also be used on a 42" LCD non-hdtv at some point), I would also like it to last along time. The 360 is nice, cheap games but it obviously doesn't match the ps3 specs at all. Would i be correct in thinking the ps3 will long outlive the 360 in terms of having new games made for it? I also need to be able to hook it up to my pc speakers (standard audio stereo jack thing). Dont really wanna exceed £250 on the core console, which i think i could just about find a 2nd hand ps3 for at a stretch. Online play isn't a priority either.

Thanks for any pointers,

Jack

I do believe the Ps3 will last longer than the 360. As the Ps3 is only just coming into it's own, and already has big name games scheduled as far away as 2010. Which for me shows a long life expectancy.

That said though, Just because a console is older, If you've never had that console, there are games on the 360 that you are missing out on. BIG TIME. And it's not like the 360 is going to die out in the immediate future.

unfortunately, as with most threads like this. I always try and give the same advice.

Don't look at which console to own PERIOD. Just look at which to buy first, and which to buy later.

I would recommend, Getting yourself a 360 now, And saving up to also own the PS3 in the future. As you will miss out on some great games if you don't have your fingers in both cookie jars

I agree.

It depends really - are you that bothered about Blu-ray movies and do you need wireless? If not then the 360 is just as technically capable as the PS3, there isn't a massive difference in overall quality between the two for gaming so looking at hardware specs (aside from Blu-ray and wireless if they are important to you) is the wrong way to go about it.

In short what I'm saying is you'll have to look at the games and decide which system offers you the games you want to play right now. My personal opinion is 360 but I own both systems and like them both a lot. I also own a Wii but personally don't think it can even compare to PS3 or 360.

If you arent using a HDTV and you are using the console primarily for games then I think the 360 is the way forward. The PS3 has some awesome titles and the Blu Ray player is a major advantage at the PS3's price point but as you are using a non-HDTV you wont be able to take advantage of the better quality picture.

The 360 isn't going to be phased out for another 2 years at least I'd say and the massive back catalogue of quality games will keep you occupied for more than that anyway.

Thanks guys, i think i will go for the 360 then as it does have a lot of games that will keep me busy for ages :) If i could get both then i would, but student funding is limited :p

No you are not!!

I'll have to sync up so that'll double the cost

So ps3 is cheaper

Hardware isn't really the best measure of a console's anticipated lifespan... consider how long the PS2 has been around.

Xbox 360.

I also doubt your monitor is HDCP compliant? If it's not that means extra hassle if you wanted the PS3.

I fail to see how Blu-Ray or wireless aren't important. I'd go for a PS3.

If missing out on those really doesn't bother you, the only real complaint I hear from friends who own or use an xbox360 is the noise.

Also - speak to your mates. One guy I know wishes he'd bought a PS3 simply because none of his mates are on Live - most are PS3 owners ;-)

Edit - Just read the bit about online play not being an issue! Why??

I think the only thing I would disagree with is the "save for a PS3 in the future" bit. I've not heard anything that would suggest that the PS3 is going to have a longer life than the 360, but let's assume that's right.

If that's the case, and if the 360 is only going to be around for say, another 2 years, and if PS3 another 4 years the console to save for will be the 360 replacement as clearly it's going to be using technology 3 or 4 years newer than the PS3 or current 360. :D

With the exception of Blu-Ray the consoles are pretty closely matched currently so we have no reason to suppose that the, let's call it a 720, would not be a huge step forward over current consoles (as presumably will be a PS4 in the more distant future). Of course if you have the money in the mean time and there's some PS3 exclusives you really want grab one of those as well - you can never have too many consoles ;)

As it stands the choice pretty much comes down to if you have a preference for a particular manufacturer, specific exclusive titles, or probably more importantly Blu-Ray support out of the box vs dowloadable HD films & video (although it still wouldn't suprise me if we see an add on Blu-Ray drive for the 360 at some point now HD-DVD is dead). Of course there are lot's of arguements about being quiter, or live being better than PSN etc but to be honest they are all 6 of one and half a dosen of the other arguments that don't make a massive difference one way or the other unless one of the points is really imporatnt to you and overides the major differences.

As an aside wireless isn't an issue as you could still have a 360 and wireless adapter for less than a PS3. Not sure why it gets mentioned as a major difference although I suppose being "in the box" is slightly tidyier.

In any case I don't think anyone is likely to be unhappy with either console at the moment to be honest.

It's quite easy really. I have a switch near my consoles and wired is ALWAYS a better connection than wireless, so my PS3's wireless never gets used. As for Blu-ray, I never rent/buy movies anyway. I've got one Blu-ray movie and that's only because it was free - I will not pay money for any others. Some people just won't ever use these features, but I appreciate that many will.

i think both consoles have there advantages, i have both but for the last month i have not been on my 360 , the 360 has by far the best games catalogue but the ps3 over ther last 3 months has started to catch up a little and when it comes to an all round system the ps3 wins hands down

if you like: games and online playing = xbox 360

if you like: games and movies = ps3

i think the ps3 will hopefully get better in the online department eventually

Its also worth noting that a large proportion of xbox360 exclusives eventually make it to the PC, while very few PS3 exclusives do. One of the main reasons i got a PS3 over the 360 - Mass Effect was the most tempting game for me but that will be out on the PC very soon.

People keep saying the PS3 has better longevity but thats a tough argument. There is no way either is going to suddenly do badly since both are doing well now. There is very little difference in specs, other than the blu-ray drive of the PS3.

To my mind, the 360 is the best atm, it is cheaper, has more and better games. Things might change in the future, but the 360 is looking even better this year than last, so it is not dead yet. Besides, with so many rumours about a Blu-Ray 360 coming, I think the 360 might just stay ahead of the PS3.

if they do get blurays lets just hope they sort out the hoover

Definitely the Xbox360 if you've not had a console, it's a great games machine, which is does better than PS3.

The PS3 will come into its own in 2009 I think, or very late 2008. Both are great machines, so you really cannot lose. Some of the deals I've seen on both machines are quite outrageous.

That's no reason to choose a PS3 though is it. A gaming PC powerful enough to handle the newer games isn't cheap, and lets face it, gaming whilst sitting on a sofa in front of a big TV generally wins out versus sitting at a desk.

*edit* And the OP is right, this topic has been done to death and quite frankly is going to end up like all the other tedious PS3 v 360 threads.

So to summarise. Buy console, buy games, sit down and enjoy the games.

You could counter Streeteh's argument with a majority of shared format releases performing better on Xbox360 couldn't you. And as for PS3 exclusives not making it to the PC, the only one worth writing about up until I've written this is Uncharted.

Possibly Haze in the coming weeks, but it's still unknown as to whether it will be good or not. I'm not impressed by what I've seen, but will buy it on the back of the TimeSplitters series.

I suspect the new model will contain quite a few changes. The die shrinks and chip all-in-one that have been expected are due around the same time. I suspect they are going to do a big push this Christmas with a 360 v1.5.
