Posted in the general section a few weeks back about a spec for a new i7 rig.

I am a little unsure which cooler to go with for the cpu Noctua and Thermal True have been mentioned before.

I have just got a Coolermaster scout case so it will need to fit in a mid-tower

Whats the consensus?

A good buy is actually the Coolermaster V8. It's cheaper, and mine is very quiet even when turned up to the max but those other two maybe %5 better in performance so if you're wanting that it will cost more.

I can get to 4.0 on my C0 so I know a D0 will do better even.

I should get mine today - I've already got a Noctua but decided to get the Fenrir as the direct contact ones are supposed to be very good - I'll prob put one of the Noctua fans on it though as they are so good at shifting lots of air very quietly.

Looked at the V10 but really surprised by the reviews as it didn't score that much better than something costing a whole lot less.

yeah the Titan Finrir scored the highest in Custom PC mag for 775 sockets, and for 1366 sockets you could have the very cool but noisy Titan Fenrir or the Scythe Mugan 2, but i've not read any other independent reviews for the Scythe nor heard any info in here about it.

Custom PC results:

IDLE:

Scythe Mugen 2 - 15
Titan Fenrir - 15
Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme 1366 rt - 16

LOADED:

Titan Fenrir (highest speed) - 44
Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtree 1366 RT - 45
Cythe Mugen 2 - 46

the Scythe Mugen also came top for AMD cpu's.

as you can see, the Titan Fenrir was the coolest when fully loaded and the fans were spinning at full speed, but the Thermalright can cool just aswell but at a lower noise level.

and funnily enough the Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 cooled only to 51 when fans were on either a low or high speed setting.

Thanks for the replies all, opted for the True in the end! hopefully everything arriving on friday so i can get building this weekend!

I agree with cmndr andi and kevintaper thermalright 120 true, with noctua p12's in push pull configuration, pretty much the best low noise solution bar watercooling

Very pleased with my fenrir, going to test a push pull on it with a couple of yate loons although its not really needed.
