has anyone any views on whether the quad core processor works any faster than the dual core ones. I am not aware of any apps that support 4 cores but they could be on the way.

I can't decide whether to go for quad core or a faster dual core.

Q6600! :D

A lot of stuff will only use one core and when it does use multiple cores you might as well have more! So 4 cores is better than 2 in that respect. I suppose you might get higher single clock speed on a dual core than a quad but afaik the Q6600s are the basically the most popular, I followed the herd and bought one and am very happy.

EDIT: Apps like 3d Max, Photoshop and stuff like that all use multiple cores.

buy a quad, dual cores will soon be gone

Intel are bringing out a complete new lineup of Penryn DUAL core's in january (E8x00 series), also new dual core xeon's. I don't think they will be gone "soon". :p

There is basically two things you should do imo now.

1. Buy a Q6600 now
2. Buy a E21x0 series dual core, they are very good priced, and overclock well. Then upgrade to one of the new Penryn quad cores (or Q6600 at even better price) later.

I think you need to look at the applications you actually run NOW. Are any of them processor intensive, and would thus benefit from running on a fast processor. If so, I believe you better off spending on dual core with a faster clock on the individual cores. If your applications support multi core then obviously go quad core. If your applications are not particularly processor intensive you might as well go quad core and get a bit of that elusive future proofing. I believe that this question which frequently gets asked is one of speed versus potential capacity.

Or to put it another way....
Do you want a couple of racehorses to pull your cart, fast but struggles on the hills - or do you want a team of carthorses, not so fast but will never slow down whatever the terrain.

go quad core, you wont have to upgrade in a while, especially after getting a Q6600, they overclock really well! a lot of people are getting about 3.4 - 3.6 just on air!
