I bet you guys are sick of reading and replying to questions like these but if you could one more time that would be great.

I am looking at upgrading from my E6750 clocked @3.2ghz ,I mostly play games and emulators mame and am running xp sp3 got a nvidia 260 gtx ,4 gig ram on a gigabyte p35-ds3p

Which processor would be best for my upgrade im looking at these now as my choices would both offer a major difference over my current cpu and are both easily overclocked?

1) Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz 6MB Cache
2) 2) Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 S775 2.66GHz 6MB
If you guys know any links I can read up on em more that would be great thanks for your time

Are you having any performance problems with your current system?

I would suggest going for a second-hand Q6600 (make sure it is a G0 version) if you are looking for an upgrade. I suggest this over a Q9400 due to the large availability second-hand, low price (around £70-90) and great overclocking. It also has more cache than a Q9400, which can be useful in some situations (but the penryn is generally faster clock-for-clock).

One thing I would suggest is upgrading your Operating System to Windows 7 64bit. Even your current CPU is more than enough to run this OS well and it does offer many new lovely features and IMHO is much easier to use and more stable than XP.

hi mate thanks for the reply,,

not really have in any major performance problems but do notice on a few of the new fps games like metro2033, bf2bc i get a lot of lag and slow down some time i never run me games with FSAA or anti scope filtering if i have to i knock em down to 1 and generaly run at 1024x 768 or 1280x1024 seems to get better at medium setting in the games but i would have throught i could get away with high thats why i think my cpu could be a bottle neck hopefully its not my gfx card gtx 260 oc have had w7 on my system had so many probs with games on it so now the disk is just sitting here in the pack.

weres the best place to find them 2nd hand cpus? ebay seems to be ??££££££

so you would still say its best to go for a slower x4 core than a fast x2 core? my board will take the q6600 but thats about it want to hold off i core for now

cheers ant

Is there any way you could borrow a graphics card before you start making CPU changes?

That would help you to see if the 260 is your issue, rather than buying a CPU and finding barely any difference.

In all fairness I'd say it's your graphics card more than anything.

i have a e6750 clocked to your speed more or less and a ati5870.i to have slow downs with it.was thinking of changing cpu myself to quad.but thinking more i just gonna wait for a bit untill the new intel cpu sockets come out or the new amd cpus.but if u can get a quad for 70quid it should help out abit on games.problem i have is my mobo is rubbish.thats why i am just gonna wait.

Think I agree with andi here, your gtx 260 should be fine for those games and you shouldn't need to run at such low resolutions. Just keep an eye on the bay and try to pick up a Q6600 for 80 or less, until you have MM access there aren't really any other good places for 2nd hand parts.

Hi,

I recently picked up a Q6600 here in the MM and upgraded to it from my E6300 which was sat rock solid at 3.2Ghz. Did me proud, my wee E6300 and I was happy with it. However after swapping over to a Quad I've noticed everything I do on this PC is much more "snappier" including gaming, image editing and web design/dev with CS3.

I've got the Q6600 running sweet at 3.2Ghz now and think I'll stick with this chip for a while yet. I didn't run any "before and after" benchmarking apps to see if there was a real difference but as I said, everything feels much quicker and smoother now compared to the C2D.

If you can pick a used Q6600 up in the MM at a decent price they are well worth the outlay. Still a very, very decent performer and will be for a long while to come. Great "bang per buck" IMO.

Great price for a Q9400. What is the make/model of your motherboard?

So long as the Q9400 is compatible with the board, I'd suggest buying it off him quick.
