Which CPU and Mobo

This is probably a question for sore eyes lol.

Currently I am running AMD 6000+ (ooooollllldddd) with a Nforce 590 SLI mobo, 4x1GB DDR2 800 with a GTX260. (I won the GPU a bit back on ebay with the 3d glasses kit for £74 used, bargain back then lol)

I want to badly upgrade to a quadcore CPU, meaning I need a new mobo and possibly ram?

If you tech nuts could help me out here it would be great, I am willing to buy of the overclockers site ofc and my budget is around, sadly...only £300. I understand high end CPU's can cost £300 alone, I am willing to, if my pocket allows it buy way over my budget but buy 1 month at a time.

Phenom II X4 Quad Core 960T Black Edition "95W Edition
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AMD 760G (Socket AM3+)
Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler

If you just want system now for around £300, that lot comes to £187.97. Thats just a basis to work from, maybe a newer chipset based mobo is a better bet, but the cpu options are a bit limited due to cost and/ or availablity when buying new from here.
Working on that lot you're left with about £112 for a vid card.
I'm sure other ppl here will have netter options/ opinions but at least its a start.:) Also it depends what you're gonna use the pc for but I am assuming its primarily for gaming as you mentioned a owning a reasonable vid card already.
You could consider the "AMD quad bulldozer 4100 BE" but that cpu has family has come under quite a bit of derision/ critisism here but is well in the price range to be a viable option I reckon, but would need an AMD 990X chipset mobo which would add a few quid more to the cost.

I'd wait and see what others here suggest.
Theres other intel offering, maybe an i3 dual core with hypertheading but they virtually the same price as an AMD quad, and an Matx mobo is gonna be a tad more expensive.

You might also ahve to factor in the cost of new PSU depending on the output, socket compatibility, etc which affect the overall budget left for the graphics card.

All that for 170 quid!!! wtf lol. How is the i5 2500, i know its 150+ but a mobo to match for 150 or so and then few weeks later i can spend 50quid on DDR3 ram then finally put it all together lol.

Well loadsa ppl here will recommend an i5 2500K and if the budget allowed I'd say so meself (I've got an i5 760 clocked to 3.8ghz). but obviously you're looking at about £250 for the mobo/ cpu alone which doesn't leave much over for the other components.
Imcidentally, I'd recheck the prices of those parts I mentioned just to confirm I haven't misquoted meself.

I'd also use your GTX260 for the time being as the new ATI cards will be out next month which will/ might affect the price of the existing ones, ie: cheaper.

I mentioned this earlier in passing but what specifically is the PC gonna be used for? If bucket loads of encoding, benching, gaming, etc, then "Davefran"'s suggestion is a good one, but you really have to look at peripherals like psu and coolers especially if you want to overclock (saying that the stock intel cooler works well), plus what vid card you want get.
You've now got two options, One rig for £300ish bought in one go, or the i5 rig bought a part at a time. As said, depends what you're requirements are

this will be used for gaming mostly, I also run a minecraft server for me and a few friends.

I am running an antec 750 psu, pretty sure its antec, its been a while since i opened the case lol, it cost me around £60 anyways.

also I still run an old school 250gb 7200rpm seagate sata drive lol, I want a SSD but price is pretty much an issue. I dont have loads of games installed at once so not really an issue here :)

So if all fine and dandy the psu can support the new mobo and cpu I can buy the mobo and cpu now + the ram or get the cpu + mobo then spend £50 on the ram a week later (i get paid weekly!!!!)

Well I suppose the choice is yours then. get an i5 system in stages, or AMD one straight away. If you're happy to wait, then the i5 is what I'd recommend, (and probably everyone else also:)). I'd still wait and see whats available to buy in the new year wrt graphics cards from ATI (I don't know what preference you might have) and I reckon your 260 would last a bit longer.
