Hi just repaired a computer for someone. Had to get a replacement motherboard but that also came with a cpu in the motherboard

Can you tell which is the better of the 2.

Both socket 775

Intel Celeron(R) D CPU 3.2GHz 3.19GHZ

or

Q6600 socket 775 intel dual core 2 @ 2.4ghz

I have just finished reinstalling Vista onto this desktop with the Celeron installed.
If you tell me the Dual Core is better. Can I just swop it without having to do a re-install of the OS?

Many thanks

the dual core will be better than a single core chip, and aslong as they are 775 socket then yes you should be fine swapping chips without re-install,it shouldnt affect the os at all, make sure you update mb bios to latest one first before you swap chips over

Hi there, Is it definitely a Q6600? As that would be a Quad core chip. The equivalent dual core is the E6600.

Even if it is the E6600 - it will be MUCH faster than the Celeron D. The Celeron is based on Pentium 4 architecture - so the clockspeed may be higher than the E6600 the actual performance is much lower, plus the E6600 has twice as many cores.

If it is indeed a Q6600 then you are looking at a chip that is many times faster than a Celeron D.

May I ask what the make and model number of the motherboard is?

The Q6600 is terrible and should be given to me so I can dispose of it :D

Seriously though, the Q6600 is probably one of the best Core 2 series CPUs going (overclocking wise)

If it is a celeron D 351 you are refering to, I would go with the Q6600 all day!

Celeron one is a single core single thread cpu, with very limited capabilities.
Q6600 is a quad core, quad threaded cpu, at stock it may be a bit lacking for newer games but can be over clocked very easily in most mobos.

And FYI you can NOT just simply swap a single or dual core cpu with a quad after the os installation(at least not with Windows)
There are ways you can do it with out doing a reinstall, but you will have to use a utility like EasyBCD

Yes defintaley a Q6600. Motherboard that died was a MSI N1996 / MS 7366 ver 2:2 (micro ATX)

The motherboard I have had to replace it with is a

MS-7336 HP/compaq DX 2300 (micro ATX)

Basically I was asked to fix a 'medion' desktop (bought from Tesco) turned out it was motherboard that was partially dead (did have power for pci express slot & cpu fan etc)

So got this micro atx as a replacement.

Just got the celeron in at moment, vista is at 85% doing its windows updates.

So am better of using the Q6600 then, but not sure if I can just swop it & the os install will be ok, some of you are saying yes & some saying no.

Not really going to cause a problem as only just installed OS

Just want to sort it before I put other things on
Need to somehow find bios/cpu drivers etc if you think they will be needed or windows/vista find them itself?

Thanks

I have a socket 775 system which was originally set up with a Pentium E6750 and Windows 7 64-bit Professional, and I recently upgraded to QX6700. It worked perfectly, with no need to reinstall anything. So you can upgrade from dual-core to quad-core and use the system with no other changes. Whether the same is true when upgrading from single-core I don't know.

Possibly an MSI mobo, we have Hp Dx2300's in work, they are a cheap workstation/desktops and support upto an E6700 Core 2 Duo, not the core 2 quads I'm afraid, as for drivers and bios, you will get them on the official HP DX2300 downloads page, but only upto Vista, not W7.

Might be worth selling the Q6600 to recoup some of the costs spent repairing this system? Q6600 are a great chip and generally OC very well, I'm still using mine, running at 3.4ghz for a few years now :)

Yes it is MSI,,,,,so if I was to put the Q6600 in it, it wouldn't do anything at all?

That's a shame, when I got this replacement motherboard, I just presumed because it was A) micro atx
&
B) socket 775

It would be fine, especially as virtually same mobo models

Looking at this, it may work - but it will be a bit tricky.

Personally, I would sell the Q6600 at the going rate (£50-60) and buy a chip you know will work fine (like the Core 2 Duo E6600 for ~£25). This will be much faster than a Celeron D, shouldn't have any additional issues due to it not being fully supported and put some extra money in someones pocket.

It's possible it will work, but it is not officially suported on that board and therefore may be unstable, as said, better selling it and buying an E6600 or 6700 that is supported, would be far better than that Celeron and would get you some cash back.

I shall ask the people who own the desktop what they fancy. Or perhaps see if I can find a Micro ATX motherboard suitable then.

What do I need to look for on Micro ATC motherboard that will allow me to use the Q6600?
