Which CPU cooler? (TRUE/Noctua/Other?)

Hi.

I posted this originally in the "cooling" section, but I've only one reply from someone who didn't actually answer my question (thanks though, if you're reading this!). It's kind of relevant to this section as well, so I hope no-one minds me posting it here...

Guys/Gals/Llamas

Going to be ordering my new kit today. Will be a P5Q-Pro m/b and a Q9550.

I've been advised to get a decent cooler to allow me to o/c, but am not sure which to get.

I like the look of the Thermaltake (have one on my s939), but have heard that you need to lap it. I have no intention of doing that (wouldn't know how anyway), so it is a bad choice?

An alternative would be the Noctua, but that appears to have only a 3-pin fan on it. Don't you want a 4-pin PWM fan for a CPU cooler?

Any other suggestions?

freezer is ok, but fairly loud and low end, hence it's price. I would still go with the thermalright 120 series. with 1 or 2 noctua fans on it.

Thanks - I've done a bit more reading and apparently lapping is only a luxury extra. Should work fine without (it's not like I'm an overclocking guru).

just curious, how big a difference is there in performance between the freezer 7 and the higher end coolers like the Thermalright TRUE thats on offer this week?

Have the TRUE my self cooling a qx9650. Its passive as in i did not add a fan on the TRUE. Its in an Antect 900 case so found the cooling even on low fan speed to do the job fine. Overclocked the chip to 3600mhz as i did not notice any differince when running the chip at 4Ghz or 4.2Ghz.

Vote for the TT120 here using it on my q9450 oc'd to 3.2 and nice low temps idle is now 24-25 load 34-36 tops also the blue light looks quite nice as well with all the other blue lights keeps the theme so to speak :).

I currently have a Ultima-90i, with 120mm Noctua 12k RPM attached, is it worth me updating to a bigger 120 model of the cooler, or just an extra 120mm fan and atatch it on the other side of my current 90 model ?

Getting about 62-66 temps running my q6600 at 3.4mhz under stress testing (depending on the ambiant temps). Goes past 70 if i increase the volts anymore to make higher FSB stable.

Tempted to go with the extra fan till the new AMD chips come out, then upgrade to one of those with new cooler, unless changing now it would make a big diffrence to what im curently using.
