Which CPU for a Abit A-N78HD?

Hi Folks,

I just took delivery of a Abit A-N78HD from OC.co.uk, and it looks like a really cool little board!

I am a little confused about which CPU's this motherboard supports. I have read that some chipset have problems with 125W CPU's.

Does this mean that the best CPU I can put on this board is the AMD Phenom™ X3 Triple-Core 8750 Processor? AMD seem to specify 125W/95W for the 9750 - but where do I get the 95W version?

Thanks!

 I hadn't realised that mobo was actually in stock yet although I knew that it was imminent - let us know how you get on with it.

Unfortunately abit's CPU support page is woefully out of date as it hasn't been updated since January.

It's not the chipsets that have problems with 125W CPUs but the PWM section of mobos depending upon their design.
abit imo typically have better than average PWM design (they may use fewer phases than some others but no. of phases alone isn't an indicator of good overall design) & I strongly suspect that it will be OK but you could ask abit tech. support.

The motherboard never came "in-stock" on overclockers.co.uk, it was always down as a pre-order, but it just turned up on Monday with a few other things I ordered.

It seems really good quality, and its well packaged too. I won't be able to test it for a week or two until I work out what CPU I want to buy - I would have thought that plenty of sites would have reviewed it by then - if they haven't I will post back.

I will drop them an email tonight - thanks for this!

I sent this to Abit this morning:

"I own an Abit A-N78HD and would like to put an AMD Phenom processor in
it, specifically the AMD Phenom Quad Core 9850 2.50GHz Black Edition
or an AMD Phenom X3 8750 2.4GHz.

I have read that there are issues with some chipsets supporting 125W
CPU's, which this CPU obviously is.

Please can you tell me if either of these CPU's are compatible with
the motherboard I have, and if its not, please can you give me a list
of which CPU's the Abit A-N78HD officially support?"

I will post any replies I get here.

The reply I got was:

"Dear customer,

It does not depend on the chipset, but it depends on the power design of the motherboard. A lot of motherboards with this chipset do not have a power circuit which is suited for 125 Watt CPU's.

The A-N78HD has a good 4 Phase Power design and supports 125 WATT CPU. Personally I didn't test the 9850 CPU, but we have been testing a lot with the Phenom 9750 X4 which didn't have any problems. This CPU has a TDP of 125 WATTS as well, so I don't think you won't face any problems using a Phenom 9850 X4.

Kind regards"

Looks like I will be getting the 9850 :) This machine is going to end up as a bit of a beast....

thanks for the update.

edit: can you do me a favour, please?
The manual for that mobo doesn't seem to be on abit's ftp yet so if you could upload the .pdf from the CD somewhere & let me know I'll get it hosted on the abit USA forum or similar.
