Which CPU from an i5-3570K?

I am a gamer (and will be getting a VR headset soon).

I can't decide which CPU to upgrade to.

I assumed the i7-6700K would be the way forward.

However, the older i7-4790K is faster and much cheaper and the i7-5820K is also faster but for the same price as the i7-6700K.

Do I go for the slower speed of the i7-6700K, knowing it's a newer architecture?

Very little need for you to upgrade, your 3570k should do at least 4.5ghz.

If you're desperate to upgrade go X99 route, 5820k.

i went from a 3570k to a 5820k.

its a nice increase.if you game some games you will probably only get 10 percent maybe extra fps but in some can be massive jump. my bf4 fps have gone 30-40 fps better

rust went upto 30 percent better. also better minmums.which means smooth gaming.

the 6700k is level with the 5820k. the higher clock speed is canceled out by the 2 extra cores but once you overclock the 5820k it hammers it.

thats why i went with the 5820 over the 6700k

then you have in multitasking which its a lot better also in editing. so win win really. they also run pretty cool.

Wait until you get your VR headset and see what people with various CPUs say. You might find that what you have is just fine.

Just to put things in to perspective and show how little performance has increased in the last 5ish years. The passmark score on my 2600k @ 4.6ghz is 11112.

So yea. i5 to pretty much any i7 from SB and up you will see an increase. But I'd go 5820k or wait until later in the year when new stuff gets released.

The new chips from Intel that are coming out are just refreshed models of current ones. Kabylake in Z170 and broadwell E on X99.

I would go with the 6700K if not going X99 simply because z170 is the latest architecture. Maybe you should be asking yourself what that offers over z77/z68 as you already know that any cpu speedbump is going to be noticeable but hardly ground-breaking.
