Which cpu have unlocked ?

As far as I am aware only this one has a unlocked multiplier.
As like you mention most only use the turbo option to increase the multiplier.

There was confusion related to the memory multiplier, or possibly the uncore one being "unlocked" before release. Along with fears that overclocking would be impossible by design and so forth. It doesn't appear to be the case.

I can't shake the suspicion that the identity of the chip is set by the resistors/silvery things on the top but I'm yet to see anyone try moving them around.

Unlocked multiplier means you can set it to anything you like. So a 975 will let you try x30 if you fancy it. Most processors come with some value burnt in, and you can decrease it on most motherboards.

I'm not denying that the 950 has a x23 multiplier. That doesn't make it "unlocked" in the universally accepted sense of being able to set it to any value you wish.

Nice one, but i wouldnt fancy running it like that during the summer months. This is my biggest problem when it comes to cooling, during the summer the sun is beating into my room for the best part of the day, tends to get a bit too warm.:(

Yeah that 100% right, I just downgrade to 3.8Ghz in summer month!

Havent experienced the warm months with the i7 yet, though my previous 3.8ghz q6600 ran a bit toastier compared to its winter temps, 6-7c iirc.
