Athlon XP 3000 skt 462 (Not sure of codes)

or

P4 2.8GHz P4 512k 533fsb

Building a system for the girlfriend and I want her to have the faster of the two even though im tempted to plump for the P4 because the case is quite cramped with poor airflow

cheers

Do you currently have the motherboards or will you be buying these if so.

i would be going for a Barton 2500XP which will overclock to 3200XP with the change of 1 settings and possible with a little extra Vcore.

Cheapest and fastest solution.

P4's came into their own after the 800mhz FSB came out, the 2.8Ghz 533FSB will be missing HT, and not have the benifit from the high FSB. My 'Guess' would be that the Athlon would be fastest.

If it was a Northwood C, with HT and 800mhz fsb, then the P4 without a doubt.

The only 533 with Hyperthreading enabled prior to the 'C's was the 3.06Ghz.

Considering how expensive the old P4's are getting I'd always be tempted to go for an XP-M - getting nice and cheap, and if you get a good stepping they clock extremely well! (Iqyha or Aqyha for preference!)

Edit: even a modest overclock on air will take you to 2400Mhz, which would be the equivalent of a 3.5Ghz P4
