Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz Guaranteed to run at 3.00GHZ
OR
Intel Core 2 DUO E6750 2.66GHz Guaranteed to run at 3.20GHZ

Building a new Rig for gaming and just wanting advice on what CPU to opt for..
Havnt got limetless money so the quad at £160ish is my limit..for the CPU..
Putting them in a P5KC Combo..(will this board take a quad ?)
Any advice appreciated,,;)

Don't bother buying the "guaranteed to run @" chips.

Get the OEM quad chip with a nice aftermarket heatsink if you can afford it....otherwise the E6750 will do just fine as well. There are onyl a few games that fully utilize 4 cores, but they are coming so the quad will last you a bit longer.

In either case both will do over 3ghz at least. (my e6750 does 3.6ghz on only 1.32v)

The mobo you mentioned will handle either of them chips fine. As said above don't get the guaranteed to run chips.

I've got a Q6600 at 3.6GHz stable.

Cheers for the heads up on the gauranteed to run chips will get the stcok ones..saves a little bit ..
Thanks for info also im going for the Quad,, :)

Depends on game

I have both of those you have mentioned. Performance varies from game to game.

examples

Flight Sim X - Quad core outclasses the e6750 hands down. not uncommon for all 4 cores to run at 100% whilst flying the sim.
TestDrive Unlimited - they perform on par with each other.
NFS Carbon - no noticable difference
Battlefield 2 - runs just as crap on both ... (damn stupid internet connections :) )
Older games the e6750 runs better as it clocks slightly higher, and the games only use 1 core.

Good choice deciding on the quad. It also future proofs a little for future games when they start making them to utilise all cores.

i went for the q6600 and get excellent framrates @2.4ghz stoc... fps average crysis... 60fps vsync pretty much everything else, there is almost no need for the performance of the high end duals

(8800gt)

There is no game really needs a Quad today so gets your facts right. ;)

Crysis does not even use Cores properly and esp Quads, there is no advantage with a Quad and thats from the horses mouth.

To get 60FPS in Crysis you must be playing at low RES+Medium settings.

All good reviews will tell you a faster Dual is better for now (not taking how long your keeping the CPU into it).

Crysis is GPU limited so its not a good example of what Quads can do, but for a game thats been properly optimised for multi cores it will make a difference. Check out any benchmarks of Unreal Tournament 3 for example. And more multi-threaded games are bound to be on the way.

Lets not get into buggy Crysis only he metioned it. :)

No game now used Quads fully (I cant comment on the above Flight Sim but highly doubt it), I believe some have patches like Supreme Commander.

Alan Wake is the 1st to use Quads fully out the box so I believe.

Again anything I have said above can be seen in nearly any good reviews and by using the SEARCH in this forum instead of Multiple Dupe Threads.

Both the above CPU's are now old hat, I would buy a E8000 or a new Quad thats just arrived if you can afford.

crysis is just about the buggiest game i have ever played...

Either way, i would suggest a Quad - better future-proofing, and gives you that bit of extra power if you want to do some sort of encoding or something...

I would suggest one of the new quads aswell, I had a high dual core, but the quad at pretty much the same speed seems nippier.

I would go for a Q9450 if you have the money or a Q6600 if your strapped. You will be able to keep the quad for much longer and the resale should be better if you decide to sell. Not much in it at the moment performace wise but this should change in the future.

Benching Crysis with a E6600 and Q6600 at 3Ghz I seem to remember there was 1 FPS difference on my 512 GTS and that went to the E6600.
