Hi all

So To start this off, i currently have a 5930K @ Stock (i know right crazy)
on a ASUS WS-E EATX motherboard

I want something
Smaller ATX/mATX (would love Matx, but looks like all AM4 matx boards sucks.) (i need Optical And theirs only 1 choice)
faster/Upgrade
Extremely Silent

Use in Order:
Gaming
Programming

Gaming at
3440x1440 /4K with a 1080Ti

Budget: No Budget, But I have sense.

Wont be Overclocking As i want it Silent

Ryzen 7 Of course is my main choice right now. Cant decide on model.
Also been considering the 7820X/TR due to the Extra PCI-E Lanes future proofing

Current Build Idea:

Just would like someone/People to bounce Some thoughts off?

If you thinking about X299 or X399, id recommend waiting as now isn't a good time to buy hardware IMO.

reasons for not overclocking such a great cpu ? once overclocked wouldnt be much of a upgrade to anything unless you doing like work type situations.

And i thought i was mad "upgrading" from a i7 3770k to a R7 1700. Any upgrade from your current system would be a utter waste of money.

Going to a Ryzen system will only gain you 2 cores, but slower IPC.
Going to the new Intel stuff will gain you 2 cores and slightly faster IPC.

Your best bet would be to overclock your 5930k, and spend the money on watercooling it (and the GPU) so its silent, if not quieter than it is now.

The Core i7 5930K still goes for a decent amount on the famous auction website - it would not surprise me one bit if you sold the CPU,motherboard and RAM it would pay for most of the cost of a Ryzen 7 1700 or 1700X,motherboard and RAM.

I need my pc stable and extremely slient. & Smaller. To go smaller I need a new mobo+case

I don't want AIO as it's louder than air.

Tough call Smogsy, I know you want to go smaller but the cooling aspect will mean you'll have to factor in "BIG air" to stay quiet. Big air needs a decent size case. What about a AIO water cooler with a sound proofed case? You can get decent AIO with low RPM static pressure fans for the radiator. Having a bespoke sound proofed case will solve the noise slant to your query.

Outside that, I'd say full WC loop for noise reduction but you'll need a case to fit it all in and WC isn't cheap.

the quietest cooler you'll get is something like a noctua d15s with just one fan, or the u14s which is nearly as good, again with a single fan, using the included low noise resistors (limits fan rpms)

or as above, a full custom loop, but that will need a decent size case for the pump+radiators.

regarding the overclock, you could easily dial in 4.4ghz, instead of the current 3.5ghz base, it's a very 'conservative' overclock for those chips, run prime95 or any other stress test for 4hours or so, and it'll be as stable as any other cpu

In most usage cases (Inc those stated by op) a 5930k at a not unlikely circa 4.5ghz OC will still be faster and with more pci-e lanes to boot than a ryzen 1700x setup that most likely won't get above 4ghz OC... Can't see the point really x99 to ryzen isn't worth it for most usage cases

If the op is insistent on a smaller but still quiet setup then that complicates things although I would say currently that x99 has the best selection if smaller formats factor boards albeit it's now a 'dead' platform with no more CPU's to be released

Not overclocking is not equal to silence.

I am also a VERY strong silence advocate for my PCs, and my latest PC is the most silent I've ever built. This is a Ryzen 7 1700 overclocked to 3.9 GHz.

Having said that, I'd avoid the Skylake-X series if you want quietness, as the 8+ core models are running extremely hot for every review I've seen.

Ryzen runs very very cool, and Threadripper isn't out yet but presumably will also run cool for the amount of cores/clocks it'll have.

If you want your system to be as quiet as possible, you only need to focus on a couple of things:
  • Get AIR COOLING, because for maximum quietness watercooling will always have its pump running. More specifically get the largest heatsink with the largest fans you can, I am using the Noctua DH-15 (and I've used the ultra-low-noise adapters on the fans)
  • Get ultra-low noise case fans. E.g. this 12cm Noctua, and there's a 14cm version too (overclockers don't sell it though).
  • Use the best thermal paste, allowing your fans to run as slowly as possible. This is thermal grizzly Kyronaught at the moment.
  • If you're using HDDs, use a 5.25" HDD mount, so get a case which has 5.25" slots. Search "Sharkoon Hdd-Vibe-Fixer" on the rainforest to find these. (and if you think this couldn't possibly make that much difference, it makes a ludicrous amount of difference. So much so that I won't ever build a computer without them. It's basically magic)
  • If money is no object, and silence is paramount, ONLY use SSDs.
  • Look for GPU reviews which include decibel ratings, and opt for the quietest GPU in the range you want. For example in the GTX 1070 range, this is the Palit Gamerock and Jetstream range. And Techpowerup always check fan noise.
  • Get a Noise dampened case. beQuiet! do very good ones, but there are other companies too.
  • Get a fan controller. Doesn't have to be anything super fancy, just this is very good.

Not my first rodeo,
My current pc is pretty slient at 25DBa

But going further
I will be undervolting
Getting a big air cooler
Fans will be permanently to motherboard
Max 300rpm
Everything will be ssds
Fractal case also will add extra sound dampening
My 1080ti will put in slient mode
Stock clocks with fans running max at 1000rpm at 82c
Going for try for 20dba not sure if possible but will see.

Sounds good, good luck getting it that low.

If you're going to be undervolting, I'd say that puts another +1 into going for Ryzen. The 14LPP process is very very good at undervolting.

You may have seen that you can now get a Laptop from ASUS with an R7 1700 in it. And when Ryzen launched, there were some forum posts of an overclocker getting a 1700 down to 30W under load by undervolting. Think it was still clocked at 3.2 GHz too.

I'd probably still wait for Threadripper to launch though, just to see what your options are. This should only be something like 6 weeks or less. And it's plausible the 12 core will run cool, especially when undervolting. I'd predict something like managing 80W power draw at 3.4 GHz for the 12-core, with undervolting of course. And the new big Noctua cooler for X399 could probably cool 80W without fans at all.

@smogsy you have a similar system to mine. The truth is, there is no real upgrade path available to you yet. I've actually moved my gaming to a 6700k/Gene VIII/1080ti system and I've been using the 5930k for benching. If I hadn't personally swapped the 5930k for the 6700k, I wouldn't even have known that the "downgrade" had taken place. :p

The best money you can spend will be on the next GPU release. And as for silence, you can achieve that without switching platform.
