??

last batch of opty 170`s to come out from the USA are all CCBBE 0615EPMW
Again, I'm trying to make my point without confusing the matter loc.

0615? Do you know if there's an 0617 170? I'm waiting for the right time to buy a few opterons and keep the best one, to maximise good stepping-age.

Edit: looking around the 0615 170's aren't fabulous. Certainly very good (like 2.8 at stock) but not the best.

2.8Ghz at stock voltage for an opteron 170 is very good... they will take up to 1.6v with ease, most of the reviews from the site i bought mine from (theres 140 reviews in total, 94% with 5 stars) with CAB CCBBE 0615EPMW and CCBBE 0615 DPMW seem to be getting 3Ghz per core with 1.475v under water cooling.

I was wondering how it scaled with voltage. A lot seem to give up around 2.9 ghz. They'll do up to that with very low volts, but hit a wall. Hopefully it's like you say and they actually respond well to more volts, allowing 3ghz.

i bloody hope so, im changing board in the hope of hitting 3Ghz... :D

Desperate for an upgrade without going for core 2 then? :D I'm feeling the same tbh, I wish there was a really good reason to need a conroe :( :)

no no, i can afford conroe, however i would chose waxing my pubic hairs in single succession over owning an Intel CPU...

recieved the cpu (opt 165) today after missing the first delivery date... anyway i got

CCBBE 0615DPMW

good stepping i think right
?

Very nice indeed. 2.9 at 1.45, 3 at 1.55. Assuming good cooling and mobo.

Bought a 0615EPMW myself. Have to see how they compare :)

Just the question i was going to ask! I have an A8N-Deluxe with an A64 3000+ (Winchester core) at the moment and wondered what the most i could stick in the board was? Can i use X2 S939 CPUs or would i be better with an Opteron 165 as well? I've seen the Opteron 144 on this site but i assume it wont be much faster than what i have now (apart from the increased cache)?

an A8N-Deluxe
There isn't such thing as an A8N-Deluxe afaik, it will prolly be an A8V Deluxe, an A8N-E or an A8N-SLI Deluxe.

Of the Asus A8N and A8V line of boards they will all support dual cores (but may need a BIOS update to be recognised) except for the A8V-E Deluxe which won't (and no BIOS update will fix that).

The Opteron 144 is a single core 1.8 Ghz 1MB part, so yes there would be little difference, the Opteron 165 is also a 1.8 Ghz 1MB (per core) part but is a dual core and overclocks well so in the right board can easily match the Athlon X2 4400+/4800+ chips (and beyond).

The max for your board is the Opteron 185 / Athlon FX-60 chips which are both 2.6 Ghz 1MB cache per core, dual cores (the FX-60 is multiplier unlocked both ways, the Opteron 185 is down only).

Was thinking about a 4200+ X2 or a 3800+ X2 .. im basically looking for the best semi-value / good overclocker for gaming mainly... how are the opterons atm?.. thanks for advice

// Petros
looks like you got the opteron.. Good move! care to share what you've done with it, stepping/clock wise?

You know what I'll go one better here's the non-existent mobo in question
A8N-SLI Deluxe, important distinction when the names are so close (A8N-E, A8V etc), especially as the A8V-E Deluxe doesn't support dual cores in any form and it is easy to misremember the model name a long time after you purchased it.

true true it's kinda funny we're talking socket 939 which was simply the best just under a year ago. Now it's like ancient technology :(
