I've been doing very nicely with my ATI 4850 + E2180 overclocked at 3.2ghz, but I'm finally playing a game that can kick it's ass - Bad Company 2. It's fine when just doing the normal stuff, but when buildings start collapsing I can see the framerate taking a hit.

Time for an upgrade!

So I'm thinking of a 5850, and I need to do something to ensure that big dog gets fed... I don't think the E2180 will be up to the job - time for quad core + big cache loveliness!

I am considering the i3 bundle, (the one overclocked to 4ghz), but maybe I can get comparable performance (for less cost) by replacing my CPU with another Core 2... but what will play best with my current hardware?

Is it good or bad to move to 1333 FSB? (I'm currently overclocking from a base of 800)
Does that make it more or less likely I'll get a decent overclock?

Does the fact that I can't ever seem to overclock my memory mean I'll have trouble? (I don't know why, but it just won't go past 800mhz... maybe I'm missing a trick there?)

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome!

If you dont want to go down the i3 route then get an E8400 and clock it to 4ghz, and get some 1066 RAM.
Sell your old stuff to get some money back.

Personally I was tempted with i5 and i7 but all the new games play fine on my setup and don't struggle so whats the point.

I have just bought The i5 750 with Gigabyte US3L and what a good combi this is.

Overclocked to 4Ghz in minutes and the motherboard has not even noticed this.

I would suggest you buying 1600mhz ram for a good overclock.
