Which cpu to go with? (Socket 775)

I was thinking e6300 too but noticed that the 5200 is 45nm where the 6300 is 65nm, both have same cache size but 6300 has like 600mhz less clock out the box but has higher bus speed.
Guessing either will be better than the celeron e3400 in it now.

Q6600 for 6 quid is another option?

this system is just used to test components in like gpus and bits and bobs. i will have a rummage around in the shed i saw boxes of various intel cpus some were g2020 or something but thats different socket. may not be worth buying a cpu for this since its not actively used and its just gonna test stuff.
used it to test my old gtx 260 today which is working great.

I've got some E5440s pulled from multi-socket servers - unfortunately I had no space to keep the servers :( not that they'd be worth running now. I'd swear we had a quad socket one with 5000 series Xeons but it must have been LGA1366 as I can't see any quad CPU 771 boards and it was too long ago for 2011.
sounds good, are they pre modded for 775?
also i checked, its a gigabyte EQ45M-S2 v1.0 board. would that take xeon?

Will run at stock since its only a test rig.
Got a cooler too so wont be using stock intel one. Its an arctic freezer 7 so should be quiet.
If i find i need some more cpu grunt I may look into the xeon route but this e8400 should do. Waiting on the ssd to arrive then will get it all up and running.

Out of interest why are you after staying with 775?

These parts i found lying around in the shed and iv had a bunch of gfx cards and other bits and bobs that turned up and need testing but dont want to faff about with the main machine so put this one together to test the parts in. I will keep it around for testing hardware like gfx cards etc, can leave it running overnight on furmark etc without the main pc being tangled up otherwise wife and kid gonna kick off that the pc is doing stuff again and they cant use it lol.
