Right guys - I don't know what to do.

I haven't got a lot of money and i need to upgrade to a dual core processor (specifically for Supreme Commander (see my other post))

I could either - buy a AMDX2 939 4600 and slot it straight into my motherboard, and then sell my AMD 64 3800 for about £35-£40 and get some of the cash back - I reckon in all a £100 outlay.

Or I could buy a core 2 duo a new mobo and then RAM for about £350 - £400.

Thing is I would rather go the AMD route as it is much much cheaper, however I would want to see my £100 pounds well spent. If I plug it in and I see no improvement I will be gutted.

Also could someone tell me what the two cores are in the 4600 - are they 3800's or better? I don't want to see a drop in performance of my single core apps

i recently purchased an E4300, DS3 and Geil 1GB Ultra RAM from ocuk and for me, my system really goes like stink.

There is a bundle for £280 for an E6300, DS3 mobo and the Geil 1GB Ram.

There is very little difference between my processor and the E6300. Even at stock the e6300 beats the 4600 amd at most benchmark tests and is quite a bit cheaper. once you start overclocking as well you're going to be leaving the AMD a long LONG way behind eating your dust.

even if you don't want to overclock, its well worth the £280 and still beats the AMD...

This is from someone who was in more or less the same situation as you. I had a P4 2.66GHz cpu, 512 DDR RAM and some standard motherboard. I upgraded to this little lot and

I think going from a single core to a dual core you should notice quite an increase in doing multiple things at the same time.

But I guess what it all comes down to is how much money you are willing to spend now compared to later. If you only do the CPU now you will for your next upgrade do a big upgrade changing lots of components.

Wheras if you now bite the bullet and buy your C2D solution you should hopefully be able to make a smaller upgrade the next time. Also if you do a big upgrade now you might be able to sell your current hardware and thus lowering the price of your upgrade. If you where to wait you will most likely get a lot less for your current hard ware.

I personally went with the 2nd option of doing a C2D upgrade from an AMD 3500+ and I managed to sell my old mobo, cpu & ram to a friend lowering the cost of my upgrade.

right really well proved point 63oo is same or near enough at stock to 4200 not 4600 where do some peeps pull bs from.no point changing whole rig for your budget.stick a 4600 in .

yer just stick a 4600 in
thier still not a bad cpu its just that that intel are better
whats your graphics card anyway

You wont see much improvement over the 3800 you currently have if you stick a 4600 in.

Both run at 2.4ghz and have 512kb cache.

So in single threaded apps they will perform the same.

If you are wanting to upgrade at least make it noticable.

6300
DS3
2 gig 6400

This combo will destroy all current AMD offerings by a massive ammount.

Not at stock it wont.

Cheers for the responses guys.

My ful spec is the 3800 in an ASRock Dual SATA2 Mobo with 2gig dual channel Corsair 400Mhz Ram. The graphics card is fine for a while - is an HIS 512MB X1900XT, bought from OcUK last October time I might add. :D

I think that I should go the C2D route and enter in at at least a 6400 - preferably a 6600. I read in this months Custom PC that some chap got a C2D solution but put in DDR Ram into the MoBo. Now I know that this would not be ideal and would throttle the CPU a bit but what do you guys think. if the hit on performance wouldn't be that great then I guess I could upgrade the CPU and Mobo in the short term and do the Ram a bit later.

What does everyone think?

being as u have the dual sata how about the Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA and either the 4300 or 6300 re use u're 2gb of memory and gfx card.

mobo is about £40 and processor about £115.

would it limit the performance massively have only DDR ram and not the DDR2?
