Which cpu would be better?

After having researched processors for a while, it seems that the x4 955 and i5 750 seem to be the best for those on a budget.

Which of the two would you recommend for gaming? I would definitely overclock the chips so considering this, what would be the best one to buy? If I was to buy the 955 I would buy it new seeing as their going for around £100 but if I was to buy the 750 I would buy it second hand.

Are processors risky to buy second hand even if they have been overclocked?

I was also looking at the i5 760. Is there any noticeable differences in performance or overclocking between the 750 and 760?

I will also need a motherboard so could anyone recommend me a 1156 motherboard? Again I would consider buying this second hand but I heard that motherboards are a component that you shouldn't buy second hand.

Is this true or are they fine to buy second hand? The prices for 1156 would probably be cheap seeing as everyone is upgrading to sb.

Any advice would be great,

Thanks.

Pains me to say it but go with the i5 for gaming! I am a real second-hand merchant myself, dealt on the bay and on the MM and have never had a bad experience. CPUs are surprisingly hardy and are pretty hard to destroy. Motherboards, well, I can't see any reason not to buy one second hand (I know I did!) but I would get them of the MM to be sure as they have been owned by people who know what they are doing unlike half the people off the bay!

Might be better to specify what I need with my motherboard

support for 1600mhz ram
6gb/s support
I do not need sli or crossfire
I don't need usb 3.0

For posts I would suggest General Discussion!

Haha, +1.

Even if I only have about 10 posts in there :p

Got far more in Motors - whatever interests you :)

CPU wise, depends on prices.

An i5 760 used weighs in around the same price as a -new- Phenom II X4 955BE - and I haven't found a thing I can't max on my 955 :p

The i5 does out-perform the Phenom though, however the margin does get smaller as you overclock both.

I hope that bulldozer will be good so I can nab a few bargains on the MM:D

This would be a good upgrade path; buy the cpu, mobo, case and hard drive in July/August time.

That would leave me with a

i5 760
random mobo
4gb ddr3 1600mhz ram
antec 100/ cm 690 ii lite
512mb hd 5670
cx 400

having previously having a dimension e521

amd 5000+
rubbish dell mobo
2gb ddr2 ram
hd 5670
cx 400

Come November/December time I'd probably buy a graphics card and ssd.

Fair point.

Grab an ASUS AM3 mobo with a Phenom II 955.

The new/current ASUS boards will support Bulldozer after a BIOS flash - meaning you have good upgrade routes :)
