My old PC is knackered. Sold the bits and now I just need a new S939 CPU, got the motherboard, RAM etc. now.
I hear that the AMD Opteron UP 146 can be a nice clocker, it's £40 cheaper than the other CPU I had in mind, the 3800 X2. Alternatively I could just get a 3700+ single core San Diego. I'll most likely be upgrading to Conroe come the end of the year. Mostly use my system for gaming and watching films, i'm leaning towards the OEM 3800 X2 however. What do you guys think?

My 939 bits are already promised to someone & I hope to wait until Conroe comes out in July & see how it compares with socket AM2. If you are going to use a 939 setup until the end of the year, why not wait until everyone is selling their socket 939 gear cheap in the next few weeks and pickup a bargain. ;)

I would get a opty 170 and clock it fx 62 speeds of the up and coming AM2 socket.

But if you are going to get a conroe just get a cheap cpu to tide you over.Like a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 90nm (Socket 939) - OEM for 70

Opted for the Opteron 165 in the end, off the bay. Tried as hard as I could to push my funds to a 170, but alas no. But I hear the 165's are pretty good clockers, cheers for the replies ;)

depends on how much you want to spend, if you are waiting for conroe then why dont you get a 3700+ SD for £110 and that will tie you over until conroe comes out in a few months? then the money you save could go towards the conroe system
