Hi. Currently have an Opteron 146 clocked to 2.6GHz(I have had it faster)

Thinking of upgrading. Want to stick to 939 as can't really afford to upgrade my entire system at the moment(yes, I would love a conroe!).

What is the best value for money upgrade at the moment that would give me a decent performance gain?

I do a fair bit of video editing, and play the odd game(Oblivion, HL2) from time to time.

Any advice gratefully received.

PCMark04 (higher is better)

Opteron 144 5647
X2 3800 6883

Doom3 (higher is better)

Opteron 144 114.3
X2 3800 100.2

Lame3 Compression (Lower is better)

Opteron 144 15.77
X2 3800 17.39

Cinebench (Lower is better)

Opteron 144 65.0
X2 3800 39.7

I Suppose it depends on what you doing, whether the application is looking for multitasking capability or raw processor speed, but imo the 4400 will outperform 146 overall. Your games would probably run about the same, but the video editing should be much better.

This might be a good idea for you found it the other day whilst on these boards.

the board is a Intel 2 duo but supports both AGP and PCI, along with DDR and DDR2 and if you use a well know search engine you can pick it up for about £40.

a bargin since i am in the same position as you this would be a good intrim step towoards a nice conroe system.

Cheers for that looks like it could be the one!! So my Corsasir RAM would work in this board?

as long as it is ddr400 this should be fine.

its the board i will get to go from my AMD 3500+ to intel duo since i can keep all my other bits it will keep the cost of the upgrade down and gives me scope later to upgrade graphics, ram, etc.
