Sorry, probably this has been asked many a time, but which is better now, AMD X2 or Intel Core 2 Duo.

My sister is looking for a new machine, and unsure whether to go for a E4300 or E6320 or X2 in either 3800/4000 or 4400 guise. Also noticed there is a new Intel Viiv which I'm not sure about.

As always, advise would be grateful and order of preference would be good.

Thanks

Better no idea, faster overall is the C2D, its like 1 year old and AMD are 3.5+yrs old, the new CPU's from both camps are due in coming months (Oct-Nov), the AMD's are cheap as chips right now, be nice to get one of 1st AM2+ mobos soon and then a faster desktop CPU early in 2007 using a normal AM2 CPU for now as I was doing on a AM2 mobo.

Its hard choice right now even if you are simply staying intel as of the E6850 and Q6600 :(.

is your sis the kinda person to appreciate or make use of the oc capabilities of the 2140/4300/6320? :p

seriously tho ide either stick a 2140 (£46.99) in a EVGA 650i (£58.74) & clock it slightly for a cheap reliable rig, or just put together an X2/3800 rig & do like wise. i don't think ide bother with the 4300/6320 option becuase she probably wouldn't notice the difference anyway so spending the extra wouldn't be worth it ( imo that is ). ;)

If you're not overclocking it doesn't make that much difference between Intel and AMD at that sort of price. You may even ne able to get a better AMD setup as MBs can be a bit cheaper allowing you to spend a bit more on a faster AMD CPU.

well the 4300 is coming in at the same price as an X2 4000. She won't be using it for overclocking, also looking at a X1300 rather than onboard gfx Intel 3100 as brother in law might use it a bit for gaming.

Upgrading from an XP 2500. Also curious about the difference with the Viiv.
