Which CPU ?

I currently have an E6300 Core2Duo and an ATI 1950pro and am looking to upgrade.

I'm looking at the ATI4870 and think I may need to upgrade my processor to take advantage of the new graphics card (I run at 1920x1200 on a 24" dell).

So what are my CPU options ? I mainly do 3d rendering, 2D graphics and games (mainly driving games)

Any help or advice as to what to go for (best bang for buck.. I'm not rich) would be very much appreciated.. thanks

Just one thing.. would quad core be any good at gaming (the lower priced ones I could probably stretch to).
