I was reading an article about a top-end DELL machine and it was using this soundcard, under the spec it was listed as a Sound Blaster® X-Fi XtremeMusic Sound Card?

But I don't think thats the XtremeMusic?

Some kind of OEM card, they even have own drivers for it.

The retail version has gold connectors and does not have them optical connections.

also im thinking of getting an x-fi card for my media pc which is got an abit nf7-s v2 mobo using sound storm.
is xfi compatible with the motherboard?

also the 2 cards in my price bracket is the xfi audio basic and the extreme music which is the second cheapest. is it worth getting the xfi music over the bog standard one?

Yes it does look like the XtremeGamer (which is the card I own) except the card pictured in the opening post has two Toshlink ports.

Pity to not use the Soundstorm on that Classic motherboard.

If your using digital connections to link your speakers then I think you should stick with the SoundStorm.

Are you using digital or analogue?

The XtremeGamer is a mean analogue card!

im using analog connections. iv also read that the digital out on the sound storm is awsome for quality, but the analog is a bit lacking. i can hear distortion as in crackling sounds, expectially when the grphics card is put on load i get a whine sound from the speakers which are creative 5.1s.

just want a cheapo sound card which is got good quality analog output. unless there is a way to hook up the soundstorm digitally.

actually i just sussed out the distortion/crackling sound, its only comming from the LCDTV speakers and not from the 5.1 speakers which are also hooked up. i think the speaker cable going to the tv is a crap one since it also has mixed the left and right channels up, so left is playing right etc.
gonna get a new cable first and see if that sorts it out. either way im gonna stick with the sound storm.

digital output form the soundstorm boards was honestly crap. i dont know why people held in it such regard, but i noted numerous problems with them included limited speration, increased background noise, pitch shift in the sub bass region with DICE (what we now know as DDLIVE) enabled. it certainly was nowhere near awesome, but it had a purpose and it did that well enough.
