Hi have at the moment got single card and thinking of getting a second to maximise the mobo and gaming pleasure :) It's got a Ati His 6970 at present, would the second slot be able to take full advantage of another 6970 or should i consider a different cheaper card.

I'm Thinking that with the mobo that I have doesn't do full x16 on both slots and says will comforms them to both x8. how will this effect it. What will the Gen 3 pcie will have any effect also.

THanks for thoughts.

Both cards running at x8 is perfectly fine.

You might see the odd couple of percent difference from x16 but that's it.

Gen3 will make no difference as they're Gen2 cards.

Right thinking that might go for the 7970 as that has gen 3, in that case. Would putting the 6970 as second card hinder it from using gen 3?

Thanks for help

If you mean use a 7970 and a 6970 together, it won't work. Maybe I am reading it wrong? You need to get another 6970 to make crossfire work. Or upgrade to a 7970 and sell your 6950, getting a second 7970 further down the road.

Damn thought crossfire didnt need that precise now, oh well.

So 2 x 6970 or 1 x 7970, 2 x 7950

Well I had two 6950's then upgraded to one 7970 which is identical in performance, but more futureproof and no (potential) crossfire issues. Personally I would say go for 2x7950's if that is the max your budget can stretch to. It will outperform one 7970 considerably. If you think you might get the cash for a second 7970 in the near future, then I would say get a 7970 now and buy another later. That's kind of what I am doing, also waiting to see how good and expensive the 7990 is too.

Lol will have to consider the headlock move lol

I try the get the lot and dont get anything for a long time works most of the time :-)

I have the missus factor to consider :-) so that will effect the final decision :-)

I also had the missus factor to consider so went for another HIS 6950, very happy with performance and no issues with cross fire, fantastic scaling, no stutter, as for Gen 3 unless you run tri/quad fire the i wouldn't worry about it

Gone for the 6970 ordred should have it tomorrow will be a monster of a machine :-)

Nice one, I upgraded to another 6970 for crossfire 2 weeks ago. Happy with the performance so far in all of my games like May Payne 3 and Battlefield 3.
