Which current NVidia Card has roughly same performance as ATI 3870 ?

Looking at upgrading from the ATI 3870. I'd be interested to see where that fits into the hierarchy of today's cards performance wise as a guide. Any clues ?
EDIT: Or perhaps it performs lower than any modern card !!

I suppose the closest 500 series card would be the 550Ti? At that price point though I would consider the 6850 instead.

8800gts/9800gt is around the same power as the 3870...

anandtech.com/bench is the BEST place to get the bench marks between cards, processors and much more xD

also @ orcvader, the title is what card performs close to the 3870... the gtx550ti is far more powerful and is close to my 5770 which out performs the 3870 by miles.

true, the GTX550Ti is a disappointing card just like the GTS450... best card he can go for is the 6850... great card with a lot of overclocking headroom xD

The ATI 6770 looks interesting, well priced. The NVidia range is confusing me a little at the moment.... I want a card that plays nice with Linux as well, and NVidia have a better reputation there. But the newer ATI cards should work OK. My 5450 in another box is OK under Linux.

the 6770 is basically a 5770 in sheeps clothing... there is only a frame or so in it between them... i own the xfx hd5770 single slot and its a great card and cheaper... the downside to the 6770 is that is uses far too much power for what it is

When looking at current graphics cards for gaming, I would try to aim no lower than a AMD 6850 / Nvidia 460. However, your resolution and preference for various graphics options, such as AA, will also have a bearing on the situation. So, if you are running a very low resolution then even a 6850 need not necessarily be the minimum spec, you might be able to get by on something more in line with a 5770's performance.

I would recommend the 6850 easily... great overclocking headroom and a good card!

GTX550Ti is a disappointing card and the 5770/6770 ain't too far behind it in terms of power...

Thanks for the help - I'll have to stretch to the 6850. Just need to do a bit of research on the Linux side. I started this thread thinking I was going NVidia, but ended up ATI subject to the Linux side of things being OK too.

Erm, ATI ain't THAT BAD for linux drivers... just make sure you choose the linux drivers when downloading them and done.

linux is becoming popular quite a bit as windows 8 looks to be a "vista/me" disappointment with the tablet design... you can choose a normal desktop version to make it look like windows 7 BUT who wants an OS that is mainly designed to run on a mobile/tablet device... not me... i am sticking with windows 7 thank you very much! (lol bit off topic there xD)

A good choice by the OP, AMD are also apparently much better with Linux than in previous years.

I wouldn't say the 6870 is much faster at all than a 460, though it is consistently ahead in many games. Unless AA performance and overclocking are particularly important then I think the 6870 is a fine choice for the money.
