There's a lot of debian. You don't have to download the entire set of dvds.
Either use the netboot iso (200mb ish?), which will download some stuff during installation, or use the first CD from the set, which can install everything you're likely to want without using the internet.
You can use the DVDs if you want to though.
Oh - to start with you want "stable", also called "Wheezy". In a few months you may want testing, also called "Jessie".
