Haven't used Linux for years, and when I did it was minimal - what should I start on?

It'll be on an old 1GB ram laptop, just to get me used to it.

Ok, now upon returning home it appears my sister is using the old laptop..

Are liveCDs worth it, and how about dual booting on my computer? or is it too much of a hassle..

I was actually going to try out Ubuntu today, after trying "gutsy gibbon" or some thing sounding like that, long time ago :)

But what can you actually do with it?
Forgive the lack of knowledge! It is a genuine question!

Surely that question's like saying 'what can you do with windows' or 'what can you do with OSX?'

Compute!

On peppermint at the moment.

Whacked it on a 45GB partition for now, all appears to be working out the box (including the 6850 graphics card which surprised me).

Ooh excitement.
